I went to get oil and a filter for the Denali this morning and had to order Mobil One 5w-30 in. Wal-mart was out also. They fed me a line about the huricanes destroyed their plant. Is that true? Or are they changing something up for 09'??

Anyway, oil change project on hold til tomorrow.

I have also heard that one of Mobil's refineries where Mobil 1 is processed was heavily damaged. I do not know the truth behind it, but you'd think that synthetic oil wouldn't HAVE to be produced at a refinery, since, by definition, a 'synthetic' oil isn't made with crude. Or is Mobil one of the companies that super-cracks crude to make their 'synthetic'? I can't remember.

True, Mobile1 is a Gen3 oil, not a true synthetic(Gen4).

Yes, they are having supply issue. From the mobiloil.com website;

We regret the limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oil. Due to the impact of Hurricane Ike on our raw material suppliers, we are experiencing limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oils. We appreciate your loyalty to the Mobil 1 brand and the trust you have placed in our products. We are working quickly to have your choice of Mobil 1 motor oils available at normal levels as soon as possible. Thank you for you patience.

I heard about the 'supercracked' crude 'synthetics' off this forum some time ago, I believe. Unfortunately I can't recall which ones were true synthetics with the exception of Royal Purple and Amsoil.

I can admit I am not a oil "scientist" but I can tell the Mobil 1 data sheet (for each one weight/grade/viscosity I checked) states it is a true synthetic.

I'd have to dig. I know if you 'google' it there is all kinds of info on it. They sure dance around the question on their website.

Have Group 3 Base Oils Been Substituted for Better PAO Base Oils?

Why does Mobil 1 refuse to specify as to the base oil used in their synthetic products. I remember the Mobil 1 oils in the past proudly proclaimed that it was a PAO based oil. We all know the newer group 3 hydrocracked base oils are much cheaper to use than PAO based oils and are less stable in high temps. It would seem to me that if Mobil 1 still uses the better PAO base oils as their primary base oil, you would want to clarify it among those who are switching to other oils because of the ongoing internet talk that says Mobil has substituted group 3 oils for the better PAO oils. Any comments that would clarify the issue?

Answer:

As we're sure you can understand, ExxonMobil does not discuss formulations publicly,as this information is proprietary. We would rather focus on the advanced technology and proven performance that our engine oils and other products offer to our customers. Mobil 1 is the world’s leading synthetic motor oil and the one chosen by more original equipment manufacturers around the world as factory fill. We want those facts to speak for us so our customers feel confident they are getting a high quality, high performance product that provides ultimate protection to their vehicles.

hmmm maybe that is why the price went from like $23 for the 5 qt jug to $26 about a month ago. They were fully stocked here locally about 3 wks ago and when I went last week almost all of their Mobil products were no where to be found on the shelf. There was a huge empty place except for some 10W-30 and 0W-30 here and there.

I googled "is Mobil 1 a true synthetic?" and The link I posted is what I got. I cant find any reasonable information to prove it is not. If you can, please post it.

To me anyway, that statement doesnt seam like they are dancing around anything. Just being protective of there product. Most companies will not give up there secrets if those secrets give them an advantage. Makes sense to me.... :rolleyes:

I felt the opposite, definately not answering the question. I am 99% sure they are not GEN4.
