A Few Engine Mods...

So I've decided I have spent enough money on the looks of my truck, time to put something into the heart of this thing!

The first on my list are some decently priced bolt-ons followed by some heavier items.

Throttle Body Spacer

Mas Air Flow Sensor

Chip

Headers

Pistons

Cam

It's a toss up between the mass air flow sensor and a chip because I have been told that if i put an aftermarket mass air flow sensor on my truck, then put in a chip, the chip will reprogram sensor and basically i would have wasted my money on the sensor. Anyone know if this is true or not?

Also just any general information on the items i have listed would be GREATLY APPRECIATED and a few more ideas wouldn't hurt either

Describe this custom tune to me please, i have heard it before but never really dived into the subject, and I'm always open to a cheaper suggestion.

A set of lightweight pistons should let me rev higher faster, and let me rev higher and it be a little safer on the motor. Not to mention i can get them dirt cheap and probably put in for free, same with the cam.

You can spin past 6000 rpm on stock internals. Hell you can spin past 6500 safely with ARP rod bolts. But there is no point if you don't make power up there. With a decent sized cam that would make power up there you will want a stall, which means you will want drag radials. I currently shift @ 6200 with the stock rotating assembly, comp 212 218 cam with LS6 valve springs and hardened push rods. Aftermarket pistons would be a waste of money. If I got aftermarket pistons it would be because I'm going to spray or boost the hell out of it, and I'd also get forged rods to go with.

What are you trying to accomplish? If your looking to toss in a cam and some bolt ons, look into a cam, aftermarket valve springs, and hardened 7.4" push rods (if cam has stock base circle). You could also look into OBX or Pacesetter headers & off road Y pipe, under drive pulleys, a custom tune, torque converter (yank or precision industries), electric fans + harness, head work or aftermarket heads, stall, a new transmission.

Throttle Body Spacer - honestly they are pointless. They extend the area between the throttle body and the intake manifold...accomplishes nothing.

Mas Air Flow Sensor - an aftermarket one does nothing? They measure air flow, and are not restrictive.

Chip - custom tuned PCM or dyno tune. Hand helds are pointless. Wheatley, Nelson, Black bear, all excellent tuners who will mail you a custom tuned PCM.

Headers - Pacesetter, OBX, Stainless works, Dynamax.

Pistons - post above.

Cam - depends on what you want. A big enough cam will demand a higher stalled torque converter to make up for the power lost down low. The biggest I would go in a Reg cab Short bed 2wd 5.3 truck with 3.73's with stock torque converter is a Thunder Racing 220/220.

Haha, what i wish to accomplish? To beat my friend who has an SS, we've run several times and what hurts me most is no traction compared to his AWD, other than that, its not THAT much faster than i am. If we are rolling and go at it, he barely gets me. So that's what i want to accomplish, something to make up for what i loose since i have no traction to speak of. Thanks for all the info, it reallys helps, im new to all this so i went into it blindly.

I dunno, I think that's a a LITTLE harsh.

I agree that a true custom dyno tune is the absolute best way to go, no doubt. I am NOT knocking Justin or Blackbear. Quite the contrary. Eventhough I have never had one of their tunes, I have only passed along to others that MANY folks here have had excellent, top-notch experiences with blackbear.

My handheld allows for custom tunes to be pushed. It also allows me to revert back to stock in about 3 minutes, and back to the tune in about 3 minutes.

My handheld allows mt to log engine parameters, view codes and modify tune parameters.

I wouldn't say it is pointless. Just my $0.05.

I agree also, my dad has the 8.1 with the allison tranny in a 4/dr dually and he put a superchip on it and it really made up for the fact that the truck weighs a million pounds.

    • It is possible to add your own 12v outlet to your truck.  Check out this video:   I verified via GM Upfitters that pin 31 is the same on the 1500 trucks.  The wire is GM part number 84779405.   You can get the GM 12v outlet from Amazon  https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Accessory-Receptacle-25774623-13549530/dp/B0F1H9YRGF EWAY 12 Volt Power Adapter for GM   https://www.amazon.com/EWAY-Chevrolet-Silverado-Cigarette-Ignition/dp/B0915RRW6Q/ref=sr_1_1?   I just haven't figured out a good place to put the 12v outlet in my truck.   Some people are getting USB-C to 12V adapters  https://www.amazon.com/WYMECT-Cigarette-Lighter-Socket-Adapter/dp/B0F87WNQKB/ref=sr_1_1_sspa? Not sure if they provide the correct amperage that a device like a tire inflator would need.
    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
