Painting Bumper Trim/caps?

Does anyone know anything about painting the plastic bumper caps and trim that come on the chrome bumpers?(like in the pic) I've seen a couple trucks with them painted and they look good, but i'm not really sure how to go about doing it....what to use, how to prep, etc..

My bad, I assumed they were metal and your Post Specifically says Plastic! So my info is related to Chrome Metal Bumper!

 

 

 

There are many different ways and it really depends on the condition of the chrome areas. If we are talking metal bumpers and not plastic and the chrome is in rough shape I would recommended blasting the Chrome areas with aluminum oxide or sandblasting it. Then you need a metal sealer, there are different ones and I would recommend asking your paint an body shop. Then your ready to shoot it with paint. This will give you a excellent finished product.

 

If you have a chrome shop close you can have them put it in a chrome stripping tank.

 

If you want to try and do it your self you could sand down the chrome areas with 80 grit through to 240, clean it up shoot some primer on it then shoot it with paint. This is a lot of work and time consuming.

Any body shop should be able to do it but i you want do it yourself just prep the crap out of it (sand it), primer it, paint it. Unless you have an air compressor, hoses, a paint gun, and all the necessary filters for the airlines along with all the stuff to color sand and buff it after painting, i would suggest going to a body shop. Just my two cents.

 

Also, i wouldn't recommend painting the plastic pieces on the rear bumper, where will you step when getting up into your bed? Your nice paint, thats where.

Me too.

 

I had the top pad and airdam done on my 2000 and it looked much better IMO. I had a body shop do it and never had issues.
