Speaker Question

I've seen in a Crutchfieds magazine, in the speaker section, that some are called "component speakers".  What does that mean, and how are they different from what, I guess would be called "regular" (?) speakers?  What advantage or disadvantage (if any) would there be?  Keep in mind, I know next to nothing when it comes to stereo's, speakers, amps, etc.

Thanks.

Tom,

A "component" set means that the midrange drive and tweeter are separate, as opposed to a "coaxial" spreaker where the midrange and tweeter are mounted together as one speaker.  Some people will tell you that you get better sound out of a component set, but I think the bottom line is how the system is setup and tuned.

I have had the opportunity to use both in my vehicles and feel that for the everyday Joe it really doesn't matter.  You can probably get a better deal on a set of "coaxial" spreakers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks FIRECAT.  That sounds simle enough.  I think I fall under the "everyday Joe" catagory.  If it sounds better at what I feel is a resonable price, great.  But I don't want to put a ton of money into it.

Thanks again.

components aka seperates normally include a crossover too, you generally get better mid bass and highs with a good set. and i'm pretty sure the newer trucks have components in the doors, my 95 does.

i'd suggest components any day, better sound, and will last longer, i had some coaxials and some sand and durt worked its way between the tweeter post and the woofer cone. which makes a very dead speaker. and those were some really nice boston acoustic 6x9s too.

i've just had nothing but bad luck with coaxial style distorting and dying.

It just depends on how well constructed either are. You generally get better highs with components, but most guys can't hear them dar highs anywho.

I had a set of deck mount Kenwoods, basically a smaller version of the component speakers in a box they have now, mounted behind the seat in my old S-10 (regular cab) for 9 years and they still sounded good.

You have components in your truck.  A midwoofer/midrange and a tweeter in the doors.  Personally, I think they sound better than the pre-'99 speakers.  They really sound pretty good when you get some power behind them.  I added an Alpine head unit (60Wx4) and it made a world of difference.

the 99+ silverados have 6.5in component spekers in the doors, and they should be replaced with component speakers if you are going to replace them at all.  If you dont , you will be effectively moving the tweeter down toward your feet(it is above the woofer now) and defeating the purpose of upgrading.  I put a set af blaupunkt overdrive components from crutchfield in there and they sound great! only cost $120.  Its not that hard to do but you have to take off the panel, and in my case trim some of the inside to fit the speakers.   you also have to find a place to put the crossover(mine are inside the doors).  Crutchfield sends great instructions with the speakers for your car and even with no stereo knowledge you can do it yourself.  you have 4x6 co-axials in the rear doors, just for reference.  hope i helped

I replaced my 01 Tahoe's component door speakers with Cerwin Vega Vega 6002 coaxial's from Crutchfield ... they sent mounting adapters that let you snap the fronts in exactly like the stock ones (which should be the same for all late model trucks/suv's).  The 6002's have an angled tweeter that you can point right up and toward ear-level, and they sound fantastic (and I am even one of those "audiophile" crazy type people ;) ... anyway these are easy and quick to install - sure better speakers, like components, could be had but I definitely highly recommend these.  BTW these speaks do NOT need bass blockers, they can handle the full frequency range, that's one reason why I chose them ...  they are also a bit hot in the highs so I decrease the treble a bit.     Mark
