Possible Breakin ?

Ok I am unsure of the answer and maybe someone else can chime in and give me what they think, apparently last night sometime someone either attempted to break into my truck bed or its just a freak accident, I left to go to work this morning for a meeting at 10 am and came back about 2 hours later to hear from my parents that they found the cover for the tailgate handle to be laying on the ground behind my truck(the part that goes around the tailgate handle, not the handle itself, I had looked at it to see the clips that hold it in place to be broken off one on either side(so left clip on the top and right clip on the bottom) and it is also cracked in one spot and broken straight through on the one corner. My parents also found a golf ball alittles away from the truck so they thought it was a coincidence that maybe the golf ball was what broke it but I feel otherwise as if it was the golfball it would of not only broke the cover but dented something else too im sure + I would of heard the crack of a golfball hitting my truck regardless of where it hit. I added pics of the handle cover so you guys can maybe make a better judgement, I just want an idea before I persue this further because I put alot of money and time into my truck to make it what it is today and for someone to attempt to break in just sends my stomach into im not sure of the word but I am sure others know what I am saying. All Law Enforcement Officers of the site please chime in too. If any other pictures are needed please ask and I will get more pictures, I didnt notice any scratches or point of where a person was trying to pry it off but it just seems unlikely that a golf ball would hit the tailgate cover perfectly and nothing else, let alone at night time because who the hell is hitting golfballs at night.

First Picture is without the cover on

Second Picture is with the cover on

Third Picture is of me holding the cover so you can see the cracks/breaks

Does your tailgate lock somehow? I'm not sure why a thief would break a part that would provide him with no benefit.

As for the golf ball theory, assuming you live near a golf course, it's not as crazy as it seems.

My tailgate does not lock its just a regular tailgate handle, when I close my tonneau cover and lock that then the tailgate can't be open because the cover locks it closed, my tonneau was not even locked last night either. I just don't get if it was a true golfball accident why people were golfing at night.......... unless they were drunk then sure I can understand it kinda but the odds of it hitting that part is like crazy. I do live near a golf course but its about 5 mins away, the only thing behind my house is a florida forrest(whats in it I have no idea but its a bunch of plants, flowers n trees) and beyond that is some trailer park type deal.

I assumed you had a locking tailgate, but after posting pics, it appears you do not. Why would a would-be thief break a tailgate handle that isn't locked to gain entry?

Paranoia....self destroyer.

The golf ball theory makes sense to me actually. Besides it was New Years Eve last night....someone was probably wasted and having a long drive competition at the trailer park you mentioned.

I would just order a new part and not worry about it. There are far worse things that could have happened.

Hmmmm, do Trailer Trash really play golf? I thought they only played mini-golf in their living room/bedroom/kitchen/family rooms.

Everyone above that replied thank you very much, I can rest sound now. I at first laughed when I heard about it but then I was like what are the chances of a golfball hitting that part of the truck directly and not something else, I mean I thank my lucky stars that it didn't hit my tail-light or back window as thats more expensive to replace then a piece of plastic cover. Thanks again

As for the odds... The odds of it hitting there were as good as the odds for it hitting just about anywhere else on your tailgate, rear window, roof, bumper, etc. Just be happy it hit plastic and saved you the cost of some new glass or body work.

Hit a salvage yard to keep it cheap or ask Rich (MS3DALE) for help with the part number.

I know several people whose tailgate handle bezel just mysteriously fell off or "dissapeared". Maybe they're just made too crappy and after a while the least little hit will knock it right off.

Quite possible that someone lost theirs and tried to steal it too.

Or it could have been Smithers in the drawing room with a letter opener.

Alright. I give up. It was me that did it. I was so far off the fairway last night, that it was the only shot I had to save a stroke by bouncing it off your tailgate handle. I was just trying to get on the green with 2 shots. After it left your truck it went through your neighbors window. I couldn't get him to wake and let me in so I could play through.

Not to mention that incredible driver shot from Texas to Florida.
