4l60e Replacement

Well guys, I need your help again! Lost 11 quarts of transfluid out of my Safari when the trans line popped off the radiator going to work at four in the morning. Five miles from home and two miles to work, I should have stopped three miles ago at the first sign of a slip! Toasted the three-four clutch. This trans was rebuilt three years and 25k miles ago for $1,100 when I believed in debt. Now I don't. I've got $450 to fix it and found a 2000 S10 4L60E that was powered by a four cyl. w/ 90k miles for $200. Is this doable or do I need to keep looking? I moved away from my trusted Trans-man and the local shop said they would do the job for $1,300. I'm sure it would be a good trans after that but like I said I don't have the green stuff. You guys have proved I can do anything with your help so... please help me. Will this trans be a good fit and what do I need to do the job besides the trans, fluid, filter, gasket and tools?

Thanks for any response! :uhoh:

Is your name seriously Pat Wood?

I'm sorry, is that your IQ showing? Did I ask too hard of a question for you to answer? I heard craigslist has what your looking for. (I could be more mature about this but that was too dumb to ignore!) Seriously, that is my name and the trans is seriously "wacked". Do you have any valuable information about the S10 trans fitting the Safari?

lol I was joking around.

Seriously if the Safari has a 4l60 and this S10 had a 4l60 the only thing you can do is bolt it up and see what needs to be done. Drive shaft might need shortened or lengthened, probably some wiring issues, if it's 4wd the transfer case might have input shaft issues, the cross member might need cut moved and re-welded, etc.

What I have since learned is that while the 4 cyl S10 has the 4l60e it is not the same setup. I need a trans from a non-4x4 4.3L S10, C1500, blazer/jimmy/bravada or astro/safari. I don't want to build a trans to fit so I will need to keep searching. Does this seem to be the best course of action? Have I got acurate info?

I don't know if this would work or not, but....

Would it be feasible to take the guts from the S10 tranny and put them in the van tranny?

I picked up a recycled trans from a 97 Astro at a local yard with 101,000 miles on it. Got home and started looking it over to see what parts I might want to swap from my recently overhauled transmission with the bad 3-4 clutch. While doing so I noticed that the yard tag said "96 Astro". I looked at the ID # on the side of the trans and see its been ground off and replaced with numbers that make no sense. I looked on the bottom of the trans for the ID # near the tail and find it looks like it has been machined off. I know they had a trans for a 96 Astro with 131,000 miles on it when I called in addition to the 97. I specifically requested the 97 and they said that was the one they would give me. It comes with a 6 month warranty. I feel like I got screwed even though it could just have been a break down of communication at the yard. Is it possible the numbers are messed with because its been rebuilt? Should I take it back and get the 97 with lower miles? I drove my van 32 miles in second gear through Kansas City on the interstate with the flashers on at 45 mph on Sat. to pick it up. Now I have to do the same thing on Mon. (RUSH HOUR) to exchange it.

Any explanation of the numbers or advice on which trans to put in?
