350 Vortec Intake Sfi Injection

Just a question to all who have worked on a 350 Vortec engine. I just replaced the intake manifold gasket on my 97 ext cab, SFI injection, and when I removed the upper intake manifold(plastic) I found this layer of black carbon junk. Some of it was hard and baked on, and some softer all of it just nasty.

My question: is this normal or do I have an issue(EGR valve??).

All comments appreciated

Normal condition, which intake gasket did you replace the upper plenum(black plastic) or lower intake manifold gaskets. Just asking since the upper plenum removal is not req'd to

replace the intake manifold gaskets.

That ugly sh*t is normal, it's carbon build up. I'm also wondering why you took it all apart, if you were only repacing the lower intake gaskets. Did you clean everything before you put it back together? I took my throttle body off to clean it, and I noticed that nasty crap, but I just left it alone.

The nasty stuff is why I tore it down, it gets in everything and affects performance.

I also knew if I didnt tear it all apart and clean every thing, my buddys would take away my man card.

I also found out that the better the moter runs the less of the carbon stuff there is, also fuel is a factor, higher octane less carbon.

Less money in your pocket. But, you do make a good point.
