2 Gear Wont Start

I have a 2001 gmc 2500 and my truck it is reading that its in second gear but it is all the way up in park and wont start can somebody please help me.

Have you tried cycling through all the gears to see if all the gears are selectable? Of any of the selectable gears can neutral be found since the truck will start in neutral? You may want to check the electrical connectors on the transmission.

 

Other than that people more transmission saavy than me will have to pipe in.

Had this problem on my Grand Prix. It was the linkage, I would start there. Have you had any tranny work done?
