Slightly more technical answer....

The PCV system subjects your crankcase to a slight vacuum, which pulls any combustion gasses that got past your rings or fumes from hot motor oil out of the crank case and burns them (an emissions thing), and of equal importance, the vacuum helps your piston rings seal properly, making your motor run better and burn less oil (helps keep oil from getting past the rings on intake stroke). The valve keeps you from having an uncontrolled vacuum leak during heavy throttle operation (it limits the amount of vacuum that gets applied to the crank case when there's not much manifold vacuum to be had) As was said before...."you need it".

That's the best technical description I've ever read for what the PCV does. Well written.

Basically, if you have emissions testing, don't get rid of it, no matter what you do. If you don't have testing and want to get rid of it, make sure you get a breather oil cap.

There is no reasonable explanation to get rid of it. As was stated above, it actually helps if working properly. If it's not working properly, fix it!

Thanks ! I was just wondering if I should replace mine....dont think it's ever been done. I pulled it out and it wouldnt rattle like it should. I changed it today, part costs around $1.50 ...so it was a no brainer.

+1

It costs only about $3 and takes an entire 10 seconds to change.

Well I have been trying to diagnose a possible vacuum leak, I checked the PCV valve. I'm not too familiar with it, but whats the point of changing it? I mean its basically a piece of metal with a hole in it right? As long as its not clogged there is really no reason to change it right?

No, it's much more than that. It's basically a check valve, it allows flow in only one direction. It also allows only minimum flow when the intake vacuum is high and maximum flow when the vacuum is low.

It gets plugged, or breaks and then you burn oil and get a sticky throttle body. That's what a PCV valve does...
