Keyless Entry No Longer Works

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

My keyless entry on my 1999 silverado z71 stopped working. I noticed that I would have to get really close to the truck and mash the button a few times. This only worked one day...then it stopped working completely.

I've checked the relay(s)? and fuses on the side fuse compartment (by the drivers side door).

Does anyone know where the truck side sensor/remote is located?

...Or any other suggestions.

btw, I changed batteries in the key remote (the old one was good also).

Try resyncing your remote to your truck....the procedure should be in your owners manual.

I had one start doing that. It turned out that the internal contacts had either corroded or gone bad somehow. Try the re-sync procedure as John mentioned. If you still don't have any luck, get one on ebay. I've bought a number of them off ebay and all have been great. Some were new.

thanks for the replies,

I tried resyncing the remote etc...(I did hear the locks in the truck cycle back and forth) but after the resync , it didn't work.

I'll try and find a remote on epay.

Do you know where the sensor is located on the truck itself?

If you take the remote apart and clean the contact areas under the buttons with a pencil eraser, it may well work again. Clean the little rubber part that has the molded buttons (especially the backside) well also. I've saved several remotes this way.

I was just going to say this. I've had to do it to mine several times, and it always works. And just to be sure, you put the battery in the right way, right? (I only ask this, because I put it in backwards once, and obviously it didn't work.)

Thanks for the replies,

I went out and bought a replacement remote. My old remote was dead.

The new one works, after I reprogrammed it, using the instructions on the net (hold unlock in truck, turn ignition On off on off on off then removed key and held both lock/unlock buttons on remote).

It works for a while then it seems to forget. I have to reprogram the remote to have it work again...??

This happens within a few hours. When I do reprogram it it works like a charm but after a while nada...

When I did the reprogram I went to a secluded area (no other cars/trucks around)

Any ideas on this?

Also, my tow/haul button quit working. However it seems to only work now in 'reverse' only.

What is an easy way to replace the button switch in the handle? Do I have to take the shift handle apart? How hard would this be?

thanks again

Ok, a little update,

The new remote seems to work but at about 3-4 feet only away from the dash. I have to get really close for it to work...
