1995 Suburban Dies And Won't Restart

I have a 1995 Chevy Suburban. Occasionally the engine just dies. It may or may not immediately restart. When it won't, the starter won't turn over. Other electrical devices--radio, headlights, etc.--continue working. One clue: the light on the shift indicator (PRND321) at least when it's in park doesn't light up like it normally does when the ignition is on. Also, it's locked into park even when pressing on the brake. Normally when the ignition is on, and the brake is pressed it comes out of park even if the engine isn't running. Eventually it will start but this may happen 2 or 3 times a day.

 

We've had it to the dealer twice with no success and over $700+ in charges . The first time he replaced the ignition switch, the next time he replaced the oil sender unit and the fuel pump relay; he said the analyzer said they were bad.

 

The dealer repair tickets say:

"DIAG SYSTEM FOUND HAS POWER GOING INTO BUT NOT OUT OF REIGNITION SWITCH AFTER RUNNING A WHILE.

REPLACED IGNITION SWITCH"

 

"DIAG SYSTEM FOUND OIL PRESSURE SNEDER NOT WORKING PROPERLY, RUNNING ON FUEL PUMP RELAY ONLY, FUEL PUMP AMPERAGE ONLY 3.1.

REPLACED OIL PRESSURE SENSOR, REPLACED FUEL PUMP RELAY."

 

I heard something on a talk show about a neutral safety switch. Is this a possibility?

 

We're supposed to take it back in again but I can't afford too much of this!

Could be. Check all your cable connection going to the battery first. Also check all your ground, especially going to the engine block.

 

....The switch is mounted on drivers side of transmission under the transmission gear shift linkage. Your correct, It does work the shift indicator.

Sounds like the Neutral Safety switch to me. As easy fix that you can do yourself. Unplug a cable and take out a few bolts on the side of the tranny. Part should only be around 30 bucks. Call autozone or local parts shop and ask.
