Whirring Sound Behind Instrument Cluster!

2001 GMC 1500 4.8L. What the heck is that sound that's coming from behind my instrument panel. I can hear it while the truck is idling, and when I shut it off it stays on until I open the door. It sounds like the heater fan on low speed. Is it the mother ship trying to communicate with me?

The factory stereo units have fans attached to them that can be heard. I can't hear mine all of the time but do hear it every so often. Since you say it stays on even with the truck turned off until you open the door...it helps my theory as the radios do that. They stay on after turning the truck off until you open the door.
