Louisiana Vehicle Inspection Question

I got a rock chip in my driver's side of my windsheild literally the day after I got my previous inspection sticker. That was a year ago, and the line has since spread over half of the windshield, beginning a little lower than half way down on the driver's side. Well, I have to get an inspection again, and are they going to give me any problems with the crack? It is just a single line and is barely noticeable, plus if you're looking ahead on the road like you should you don't even see it. I just dont have any info about this any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If they're doing their jobs correctly you'll probably have to replace the windshield prior to getting a new inspection sticker but it's been my experience that most of the inspection stations in the state could care less...

It really depends on what parish you're in and how strict the inspection stations are. When I lived in New Orleans, all the stations were run by the city, and they checked EVERYTHING, including emissions. They would reject you if your check engine light was on. Then when I moved to Jefferson parish some inspection staions were'nt very strict. I could go to most any mechanic shop, carwash, etc, that had a state inspection sign. I got rejected at one place, then got a tag at the next place I went to. I now live in Caddo parish and its about the same as Jefferson. I have illegal tint on my truck(too dark) and I have had to go to a few places until I get a guy who doesn't measure the tint with a light meter. I usually roll my windows down as well, but some guys ask me to roll it up to be measured. The last place I went, all the guy did was check all my lights, my horn and wipers, and gave me a sticker. I 'm due for one by the end of March and my windshield is cracked now as well. But I intend on replacing it anyways, so I'll get it done before inspection.

Well, I took it in yesterday because it was the first day it has not been raining. The guy looked at the crack and checked it out for a while, then I asked "Will this cause a problem getting inspected." He said no, so I said to continue on. He took it inside and checked everything - lights, emissions, etc., then when I should have gotten my sticker, he said "Well, this vehicle will be failing inspection today because of the cracked windshield." I asked why he said it would be okay if he was going to fail it, and he didn't have an answer. I've got 30 days to get a new one now, but what the inspector did was very dirty in my opinion, I could have kept my existing sticker another 15 days if he had told me from the beginning that it wouldn't pass, but just for future reference to anyone getting an inspection in Baton Rouge, LA, I will tell anyone not where to go if they want to deal with honest people. Ironically enough, they had a glass shop that had representatives sitting at that inspection station I found out as soon as I left and they thrust their business cards at me haha.

My question is,and I'm not trying to be an a-hole,but why would you not want to get a cracked windshield replaced anyway?

Windshields are now a structural part of vehicles,IE-they do more than just keep the wind and bugs out of your hair!! :)

Its a fair question, and I don't consider it an a-hole. I would have loved to replace it as soon as I got the cracks because any time I get blemishes on the truck it bothers me, but I'm a college student and frankly right now I don't have the money to drop on it. I did not know about the structural aspect though, that does make me glad I'm getting it fixed, thats good information.
