Gov-loc Is Now A Perma-loc!

Well, I had this happen to my 80 GMC, too many burnouts and horsing around. :chevy:

In an event i can ony start to descibe as aggressive acceleration.... :seeya: the ole diff locked and unlocked in rapid succesion probly a dozen times, so i gave out cause it felt pretty nasty, :D and now shes practicly a spool.

I`ve had these things apart but only to rebuild, what is actually failing the clutch packs or the Gov loc system? On my 80 i tried adding more modifier and it didn`t really help all that much, i ended up throwing a open diff in her and selling it shortly after,

So i kinda knew i was going to wreck the biatch, but not this quick, I looked into different options and there is the tru-trac, detroit locker, and the ARB air locker for the 14T diff. Not very interested in the air one, and have heard the tru-trac sometimes requires braking to lock or something silly? (I searched and read a few threads.) So i guess the Detroit is for me, I noticed gramps has one, might have to ask him a few questions.

Well picked up some gm diff additive and going to try that for a little while, see if it gets better, otherwise i will be ordering the detroit :)

Well the additive was a waste, definately did NOT get any better, so ordered a detroit, a new carrier, new ring gear bolts and new carrier side bearings, by the time it gets to my door it will be just under 1k  Could have saved 250 if i "found" a carier around, but funny thing all the gal darn busted up ole trucks are fricken frozen to the ground still, looked at one yesterday and decided to shell out rather than dig that bastard out of the frost....

So heres a great price comparison on the carrier and detroit.

* do note that the prices are for a BARE carrier!*

Local gear shop > 900 bucks for detroit and carrier for 1000 bucks

Dealer > 1300 for a carrier

local auto wrecker > 450 bucks

A place in edmonton is were i ordered the stuff, best prices, randys ring and pinion was abit cheaper, but after duties and transport would have been a little over what these guys can supply it for... so by end of next week i should have her installed and rollin!

Damn,that thing grenaded!! axles OK?

yeah caught it in time, most of the shrapnel was kept inside the carrier, the magnet was pretty hairy although, cleaned her up good and went for a drive, and realized i need much longer mudflaps to keep the rubber from sticking to my fenders!!!
