Csk Getting Worse

My '01 4.8 never had any csk or piston slap or any other engine noise. About 3 years ago it would make what sounds like csk only in the cold winter months then go away after about 30 seconds. Since then it has gotten to the point it makes the noise even in warm weather and lasts longer. I am wondering is something wearing out? Could worn lifters be the source? I have always used 5w30 convetional oil, changed out at 3k.

Are you consuming more oil than normal? Maybe try a can a sea foam to see if it is a carbon buildup. My only other guess is that the tolerances are way out of spec and it may be time for a rebuild.

No, actually I never need to add any oil between changes. I am beginning to agree it could be carbon since so much of my mileage is rural. I do take it out on the highway and run it 70-80 now and then, maybe it is just not enough crappy ethanol in the gas probably dosent help. Other than the start up noise it is a real strong runner.

On those models when u get some milage on them u notice when u use an oil filter without a check valve and notice lifter tap! Usually switching a sythic oil on the older models and using a old oil filter with a check valve usually rids of this noise. Usually the 4.8 devolpes the lifter tap before the 5.3 everytime in milage!

since this noise goes away after 30-40 seconds, do you think it is lifter tap? How do I find oil filters with check valves?

Its lifter tap if it goes away most of the time. Yea the k&n have the valves most of the ac delco do and some of the frams do also just have to check on the frams alot for the chevys say they do but they really dont on the frams.

I been using Carquest, not sure about the anti drain back valve on them. I will check. Thanks for the help.
