Rear Axle Seal

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I'm new here and trying to help out a friend. He has a 1999 sierra 2500 6.0 4X4 late year. Trying to figure out how if this is a floating axle and how to pull the rear axle seal off. Is the seal at the differential or at the hub? Are there any special tools need to replace, like a seating tool?

Thanks for any replies.

Full floating axle looks like this float.jpg

A non full floating will not have that big intrusion in the center. I believe the 2500 does have full floating though. Check it out to make sure.

Pretty sure the seal is at axle tube end (wheel side). Someone else should chime in to tell me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Someone else should chime in with what tools are needed, I've never pulled the axles out of a full floating axle.

My 2000, 2500 with 8600gvw has a semi -floatng axle. I didn't think they went back to full-floaters untill the HD's.

From what my friend is telling me there were 2 different 2500 models in 1999. one with semi & the other with full floating.

I got this off of rockauto and they list two (besides the length)

1999 GMC SIERRA 2500 6.0L 364cid V8 FI (U) : Drivetrain : Axle Shaft Price Core Total

AUTO UNLIMITED Part # 2284 {8 lugs; 30 spline; 14 cover bolts; 10.5 ring gear; 33-3/8" length}

SIERRA REAR LEFT; SRW FULL-FLOAT

AUTO UNLIMITED Part # 2594 {8 lugs; 30 spline; 14 cover bolts; 10.5 ring gear; 39" length}

SIERRA REAR RIGHT; SRW FULL-FLOAT

$154.79 $0.00 $154.79

AUTO UNLIMITED Part # 2458 {8 lugs; 33 spline; 14 cover bolts; 9.5 ring gear; 33-1/2" length}

SIERRA REAR; LEFT OR RIGHT; SEMI-FLOAT EXC HEAVY DUTY

Can anyone confirm that the full float axle has a seal on the backside of the hub? It looks fairly easy to replace, but is there a hub lock/special tool?

Thanks for any help,

Is it heavy duty? I would think that would clear it right up.
