I need some help installing a Kenwood DNX5120 in a 2008 GMC Sierra. The main problem is the truck belongs to my son, who is currently in the Air Force. He is coming home next month for about a week and I wanted to surprise him with this.

So, I do not currently have access to the truck to see what exactly I need. I have done a lot of research, including Bryan's post on this forum, but I am pretty sure the dash is different in my son's truck - it looks more like this:

I found the invoice for the truck - it is a 2008 GMC TC10543 - Sierra: Short Crew 1500 2WD. Some of the options include the California package, electronic dual zone climate control, XM Radio Digital Sound System, On Star, Am/FM Stereo with Auto Tone and CD, Eight Speakers Uplevel Performance, and the Trim level is Convenience Pkg Comfort & Decor.

I am going to buy the DNX5120 from CarToys.com - they gave me a great price on it. I will also probably get a Metra 99-305 dash kit from them. I know I need some sort of wiring harness/adapter and I am looking at the Metra GMOS-LAN-01 or the Scosche GM21SR LAN. Also it looks like I need a SWI-Jack for the steering wheel controls to work.

Here is where I am having trouble:

1) Is the Metra or Scosche adapter better than the other?

2) What antenna adapter do I need?

3) I am not sure how the dash comes apart - does the piece around the radio and a/c controls just pull off?

4) Anyone see any problems with this or have any suggestions?

Thx

I installed the same unit about a month ago using the GMOS-LAN-01 to interfeace with the the chimes and warnings and the SWI-Jack for steering wheel controls. As for the antenna you will need an adapter the 40-CR10 CHRYSLER/DODGE/JEEP is actually the correct one to use. Best buy sold me one that was listed in their system but not correct.

Crutchfield does a good job of listing what components are needed for the install as well.

I purchased the head unit from the same place and bought the other items through amazon.com when all said and done it cost me $795.00

One other thing I forgot to mention is that if you want to have turn signal sound wile using the GMOS-LAN-01 you will also need to buy a SPDT relay

Thanks for the help Jeff

Does the dash piece just pull off?

I just ordered the DNX5120 form CarToys.com - They sold it to me for $515, including delivery after I asked for a price match from another retailer.

I'll play it safe and stick with the GMOS-LAN-01

Yes it just pulls off take your time and go easy working your way around.

One other thing I did was to cut some clearence in the back wall of the cavity to clear the connectors comming out of the radio. The RCA connector come out high on the radio and are a tight fit.

When you get the GMOS-LAN-01 the back page will mention to retain blinker chimes you will need the SPDT (single pole double throw) relay. You will need to connect one of the wire from the GMOS to the relay as well as a constant power. Basicly the blinker chime is the clicking of the relay.

I installed a 7" screen in my 08 as well. I used the Scoosch adaptor and it works fine. retains the door chimes and actually quieted them down a lot, which is nice. haha make sure you dont ask for the gm antenna adaptor, haha. Im glad i looked at this post, now i can get the correct one too! dang it i hate taking dash's apart anymore than you have too, those clips only last so long.
