okie1 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I just purchased an 1986 SWB K10. The PO had said the chain was slipping in the transfer case when you put it in drive, there is a noise when you first put it in drive, but it is not the transfer case as it does it in 2wd without the transfer case being engaged. The transmission has about 500 miles on a rebuild. When you put it in drive there is a clunk (best way I can describe it, but I can understand why he thought it was the chain slipping, as it has that odd sound), like slack is being taken up, but it only does it when you first put it in drive, does not do it when you put it in reverse, nor any other time while you are driving. I have not had a chance to dig to deep, but a quick initial inspection showed the u-joints looking good and no play in the drive line. Any help on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the rambling post. Okie
Darkanion Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Did you get any sort of warranty with the transmission rebuild? If so, I'd be taking it back to have them look at it. It may be something else, but with the transmission recently being rebuilt, I'd have that checked first and then look elsewhere for other potential problems..
REV353 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 MY first thought is the drive shaft, sounds like a U-joint or there is play in your rear end. That's where I would look first.
okie1 Posted April 3, 2009 Author Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks for the help guys! As to the warranty on the transmission it was done by the PO, so there is no guarantee that it was even done. I am leaning toward the drive line myself, hopefully will be decent this weekend and will get a chance to take a look at it, that is if I can get my daughter out of it! Okie
