Nav Lcd Won't Flip Down To Insert Map Disc

I am installing a nav unit from an 08 Denali in my 07 Silverado. I basically have all of the wiring done - VSS, VCIM, external DVD. I haven't done the amp yet (non-Bose truck). There is no map disc in the unit currently. I'm assuming the guy took it out before he sold it to me. When I go the the menu, nav tab, and push the "insert map disc" button, nothing happens! Am I missing something here??

Once you press the Insert Map Disk button the screen should tilt forward to expose the disk slot. Maybe after pressing the insert disk button, push on the edges of the screen in case it's binding. Otherwise you may have a bad unit.

Try unhooking the battery as well.

Unhooking the battery???

Yes. It should have been unhooked while you were doing the install, and then hooked back up after. Was it?

Negative. I've been scouring forums for weeks and I never saw that advice (not saying you're wrong!!). The unit powers on and everything is normal other than this. Would having the battery hooked up affect the whole unit rather than just one function?

It's usually not mentioned explicitly to disconnect the battery as it's an assumed step to disconnect the battery before doing any electrical work.

Darin's response above mine is accurate, as usual. Would having the battery hooked up during the install cause this issue? Probably not, but you never know. It's surprising how electrical gremlins manifest themselves. I suggest unhooking it now, letting it sit for at least 30 minutes, and then hook it back up. Although this probably won't solve your problem, it's at least one possible cause we can eliminate.

Ok, I'll go unhook it and see what happens. Thanks guys. I'll post back in a few. Assuming this doesn't fix it, any ideas on next steps? Is it just flat out broken?

This was a used unit, correct? Do you know why he sold it? Have you double checked all of the connections? Does it make a whirring sound, or any noise at all, when you press the button to open it up?

Hopefully it's not defective. I haven't heard of this problem before, so it's not common. Just a thought: last year, I opened the unit up to switch out my nav disc. The damn thing just wouldn't close when the new disc was inserted. I cycled the ignition on and off, did all kinds of things...just wouldn't move. Then, all of a sudden, it closed on its own. Hopefully the previous owner didn't have the same experience and forced it closed.

It was used. He sold it because he's doing a custom LCD install. I haven't completely finished the installation yet, I've basically ran the VSS and VCIM wires and put in the antenna. All I'm doing is plugging in the nav unit to test it before I get further into the install. It does not make any noise or sounds. It just sits there. The guy that sold it to me had it professionally uninstalled and his new setup installed. I've spoken to the previous owner and the company that did his install and they said they had no trouble with it.

The battery disconnect did not help. I didn't unhook it because I was just ripping out the old factory radio and plugging the nav in, I haven't spliced any wires or any of that yet.

Also, I have unhooked/rehooked the connections several times. There should only be 3 plugs right? The 2 from my old radio and the antenna?

No, the battery being plugged in or unplugged shouldn't make any difference at all. I installed a NAV unit in my 08 Sierra and never unhooked the battery at all. I never ran into the problem you are describing.

My guess is maybe the unit isn't properly unlocked from theftlock? Might have to have the dealer take a peek at it if so....

Can anyone second this? Programming? I had one of the techs at the dealership program it after work for $40. I have the printout from the programming.

You guys really need to start disconnecting the battery when doing ANY type of electrical work, even ostensibly simple tasks. Modern vehicles are very complicated, and you have systems that are always being powered. Disconnecting the negative terminal is a quick, simple step that can eliminate a lot of potential issues. As I said, in this case, the battery probably had nothing to do with it, but it's still good habit to get in to.
