Noisy Rear Brake Shoes

Recommended Posts

Howdy,

I bought a used '07 Silverado about 4 weeks ago with 18.5k miles on it. Crew Cab, 2WD TX Edition, 20"s, 5.3L, New Body, etc.

I've been driving it around town lately noticing the rear brakes squeak when I'm slowing down under 5MPH. I would usually suspect that the previous owner put the cheaper ceramic shoes on, but this thing only has 20k miles on it right now.

Any ideas before I take it to the shop? Could it be possible that they are already worn out? That would be evidence of some hard-A** driving by the previous owner!

Thanks!

If it was me I'd remove the drums,do a little sanding with maybe some 120 grit sandpaper on the shoes, wipe 'em clean with some brake parts cleaner, then blow the dust out of the drums.Wipe those clean too,re-assemble and see if there's any difference. My guess is they'll be better

Blowing out isn't usually recommended, if you breath that dust it could be pretty bad for you.

How do you get rid of the dust then? I know it's bad,but you gotta get rid of it somehow...dust mask?

I have some compressed air I use on my computer - that stuff is pretty potent. :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I will check into this.

I have the same issue. I bought my truck new and it's been that way for the past year. I don't drive my vehicles hard. I use compressed air to blow out the drums when I rotate my tires. It won't eliminate the problem but it seems to help a little. I haven't bothered to remove the drum itself. I just blow the compressed air in from around the outside of the drum where it meets the back plate of the drum assembly. And, yes, a lot of brake dust comes out so be sure to wear a dust mask.

Wow, interesting that the dust seems to collect in the drum and cause this issue.

Also on my rear brakes, sometimes it jerks a little when I let my foot off the brake after coming to a stop from 30MPH+. Kind of odd, huh? ..sort of like the brakes are releasing kind of hard...
