Burning Up Catalytic Converters. Engine Running Rich?

Recommended Posts

i have a 1998 c1500 pickup with a 5.0 and i have gone through 3 cats in the past 6 months. my engine is running way to rich and the excess gas is burning up inside the cat (thats my assumption anyways). i have a programmer on there and i took it off for a little bit to see if it would change things and it actually made it worse. my gas milage currently is 11 mpg and a year ago it was 15. i have 151k on the truck. im not really sure wats up can someone help me out please

Have you replaced the O2 sensors? If not, that is where I would start.

Hard to diagnose a truck over the internet with no information. Do you know someone who has a good scanner?if so id look at fuel trims, MAF and O2s. if you know what your looking at, that should push you in a direction. Dont just throw parts at it please!!!

Sounds like you have something going awry with your sensors because the computer is thinking it's not getting enough fuel. What is your engine configuration? Is it all stock? Have you owned this truck very long?
