Calling All 2500hd Owners

Hey guys... I've been looking into buying a GMT900 2500hd. I like the lines and i need something to pull a travel trailer. I've been looking at the 6.0 trucks. I can't afford a duramax right now. I was woundering how owners like them. I also wanted to know what kinda mpg these are getting. I've heard they get better than the last gen trucks, but no numbers for sure. Any help from you guys would be great.

I love my 03 hd2500 6.0. Used to have a ford and this is far better int he power dept. I recently moved with this unit towing and bed loaded and it seemed to have the same power with whatever I put in it. Overall a great truck.(except for the MPG)around 10-15.

I have an 09 CC 2500HD w/6.0l and overall I like the truck. I'm getting around 11-12 mpg in town and 14-15 on the interstate running 75. Towing my 8,500lb travel trailer, I average around 8mpg. The larger bed (6.6ft) is nicer than the 08 1500 I had, but the ride quality sucks, you can definately tell it has the HD suspension. Night and day difference than a 1500, but the towing capacity is nice and the integrated brake controller is also nice.

They are good trucks for sure, gas mileage does kinda suck (I'm always driving hilly, curvy roads), but I love it. 6.0 has plenty of power for what I need, I don't do any regular/routine towing, just a car here, or random stuff there. I mainly went w/ my 2500 over a 1500 because they were the same price for a regular cab long bed 4x4 around here (after rebates and all that), so I went w/ the 2500!

My buddy has an '08 2500HD and he says he usually averages around 12mpg combined. He hauls cattle a lot and says the 6.0 has more than enough power to pull the gooseneck.

Thanks thats what I was looking for. Do you know what gearing you have?

The 2500HDs w/ the 6.0 are some great trucks for sure. I just picked up mine in early April. I haven't had any experience hauling stuff with mine yet but I can tell you it has more than enough grunt to haul whatever you can throw at it. The 6l90 trans with the 4.03 first gear really gets things moving from a start quickly. 3.73 axle ratio is standard and I'd say it is a good balance, the optional 4.10 is definitely not necessary.

My truck is not broken in yet with only 900 miles on the clock and I'm seeing about 10-12 mpg in a mixed driving environment.

You should be able to get a nice deal on one right now, 7 to 8,000 off msrp is not out of the question.

Have an 09 2500 ext cab short bed with 6.0, towing package and 3.73 rear.

Definitely make sure you have the towing package if you plan to tow, the integrated trailer brake controller is amazing. the Ride is not great but I think it's good for what it is. It softens up a little bit when you put about 4000 pounds in the bed, which I did over the weekend. It didn't even sit that low, just a little low and level, the nose was not pointing up at all. Haven't towed too much yet, but this thing has power. I was a little concerned that the truck didn't have the 4.10 rear at first but I no longer feel that way, and i'm glad it doesn't now for mileage purposes. Certainly the worst aspect of this truck, I think I get around 9-13 on my usual daily routine and I'll probably push 18 on straight highway use, haven't done enough distance towing to tell yet.

The only reason i'd say you must go with a duramax or the 4:10 (or a 3500, for that matter) is if your travel trailer is above or really close to the capacity of this truck.

love my 09 6.0. stops on a dime. tons of power. the built in MPG guage says 12.7 mpg, towing or not. without a sway control, it is WAY more stable towing a 3,800 monte carlo than my 1998 2500 was. tow haul mode is nice if you tow really heavy stuff. GM trucks rule.

I have the 4.10 gears, which hurts the gas milage, but I wanted it for towing. The 6.0L with 4.10gears is rated to pull over 12k lbs, with 3.73 gears it drops to under 10k lbs. With my WD Equilazer hitch, it sits nice an level with the 950lb tounge weight of the trailer and does not bounce much when going over bumps. I plan on adding air bags when the budget allows.

Do you reset your avg. MPG when towing to get an accurate reading on that trip?

The Avg is always since the last time it was reset, so if it's never been reset, it's basically telling you the lifetime average MPG of the truck.

I tend to reset the Avg MPG, fuel used, and trip odometer every time I fuel up, unless I want specific figures for a certain trip.

I have the 6.0/4L80E/4.10 setup and love it. I went with the 4.10s because I knew I was lifting mine and putting on 35s. I tow an 8000 lb travel trailer, and a 8'x17' car hauler and it takes everything in stride. I get about 12 mpg combined not towing, and about 10.5 with the RV.

I got the 8.1L instead of the Duramax with the allison tranny and I get about 4 to 7 km per litre of fuel, with a 4.10 gear. God knows what milage that is....It still better than the 6.5 Diesel i had in my van( piece of crap) and alot more comfortable

I've had my 08 2500HD since Aug. 07 - now 24K miles. 6.0L gasser, no mods except a K&N filter, and I get 10-12 in the city, 16-17 on the interstate @ 70-72mph, and almost 18 on rural roads @ 50-55mph. Towing a 5K# trailer on the interstate yields about 12.5mpg. This is a lot better than I was expecting and folks are usually real surprised when I tell em what mileage I get. Plus, the truck is fast, stops quick, nice ride for a HD, and great seats. For the price I don't think you can go wrong with the 2500HDs.

I have owned my 07 Classic just about two years. Bought it to tow a 12K pound fifth wheel Rv. It does an adequate job of towing the Rv on level ground, but it struggles on hills....gets about 8 mpg towing at 60 mph.

Back and forth to work, I get about 13.5 mpg, and it does not vary too much. The ride is stiff, but it is a heavy duty truck...not a car. Like anything else, once you get used to the ride it is fine....when I put the 5th wheel on the hitch, the bed drops about 3 inches....not the 8-9 inched my last Ford used to drop.....the Chevy is much more stable.

Owning a wood pellet stove, I buy bags of pellets by the pallet, which weights exactly a ton. The guy slides the pallet into the bed with the forklift, and I don't even use tow/haul mode....it pulls great and really does not have too much effect on the brakes.

We parked the RV at a lake site, so I don't pull too much any more, so the truck sits a lot (17k miles). But most of the time I use it, it is for heavy work....hauling lumber for my son's garage, towing my son's new camper, getting loads of gravel for the driveway, etc. Sometimes I just drive it around because it is fun to drive and looks good.

Overall, I like the truck, and find it able to do anything I want it to do and there is no question about dependability....never been in the shop. I use Pennzoil Platinum every 4000 miles, and wash and wax it a lot.

I swapped the stock muffler for a Flowmaster Big Block 70 series and had a shop add twin tail pipes...looks good and sounds nice...not too loud and very little in cab resonance. The 6.0 is a pretty loud engine with aftermarket mufflers...

Enjoy

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
