If you have a drain bolt not very hard. My filter and gasket cost $35 at autozone. The hardest part was getting the pan back in place after changing the filter; maybe around 1 hour to change and refill?

Just bougth an 05 Suburban with 75,000 miles....changing all the fluids.

Dropped the pan.........what a pain in a**, hits the crossover pipe and a bracket on the drivers side.

Put in a new filter and refilled with Dexron VI.

Took off the grill and removed one of the cooler lines added and removed fluid till it change colors.........och! used 14 quarts!

If you have 4wd, you probably have the bracket that you have to remove on the driver's side. You have two bolts you have to remove on the top of the tranny drain pan mount. That is a pain, probably a 6 or 7 out of ten. They are torx bolts. Otherwise, if you don't have a drain, you might get some fluid spilled on you. Also, i could not remove the little rubber/metal gasket that the filter goes into. So I just left the old one in and used that. Make sure you get a kit so you get the gasket too. I think the torque is 8 ft. lbs, or something really low. Can't remember for sure. Overall, with bracket, 6.5/10. Without bracket and with drain plug, 2/10. Gasket kit was under $20 at Advance Auto.

Scott,

I do not think you have a drain plug on the 04. If your Burb is 2 wd, you really have no issues other than it is a messy job. You will need to remove the shifter cable bracket from the drivers side. As already mentioned, it is held on with 2 torx bolts which come in from the top. Not really a big deal. The hardest part is removing the seal that the filter tube inserts into. If it is in good shape and the filter tube fits in it nice and tight, you can leave the old one in place. If you want to remove it, you will need some type of seal pick (hook) to reach up into the tube and pull it out.

Other than that, be sure you clean the gasket surface really well and the inside of the pan and the magnet. If you have never done this before, you are looking at about 2 hours.

PS I would strongly recommend that you find a filter kit supplied by SPX Filtran. They are our supplier and OE on many vehicles as well.
