Power Steering Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi. I replaced the power steering pump on my 2000 Suburban because the shaft on the old one sheared. I installed a new pump and it works fine when driving. The problem is when the truck is not moving - you can't turn the wheel. It is binding and sounds like it does when the wheel is turned all the way to one side. I bleed the pump, checked the fluid and it is fine. The belt is not slipping. Any ideas? If the new pump is bad why would it work when I am moving? Could it be the pressure switch?

I mean, it obviously has to do a hell of a lot less work when you're moving. Where did you get the new pump and what brand is it?

Lowest bidder product. Take it back and get a new one from them. I hope you have a warranty (they usually do). My bet would be that it was bad out of the box. Welcome to the new America. We can dump our quality control and throw on a long warranty and let the consumer be our quality inspectors. It sure is like that with computers. Oh, that disk drive we sent you doesn't work? Oh, well, just send it back and we'll give you a new one. Nevermind your hassle.

Tell me about it.

I am in IT and work on them all the time.

It is unbelievable how many parts are dead, right out of the box.
