40,000 Miles And Transmission Is Shot

Recommended Posts

40,000 miles on 2004 z71 silverado 5.3 4x4 and Transmission is shot. $3,000 for new. I ask, what in the world? I thought I bought a Chevy not a dodge in 04. Never towed anything. Wonder how long the new one will hold up. Anyone else have this issue with the older Trucks?

I have over 65,000 on my 2006 Chevy.

Never had a minutes trouble with the trans.....at least not yet.

My 1999 Chevy before this one...had almost 250,000 on it. Still the original transmission.

No issues with any of mine. Always kept up on my flushes/services. I had one Tahoe that pushed the 200K mark on the original trans.

There has to be more to this story. The 4L60s are not the best trannys but they normally last alot longer than that.

What is it doing? Mine went on my 97 and it ended up being the Sun gear or Sun shell?

I lost a couple gears and had no reverse, it was $2200 Canadian with the new updated hardened parts. Google it and you will see it goes as far back as 1993 to 2005 I believe? I am also sure you will see it doesn't go at any set time or milage, it doesn't seem to matter?

I was posted a link at www.freedomsledder.com by a GM tech and that's what it ended up being.Good luck.........Irv

These transmission are not the best imo, if you do not baby them and perform regular maintance on them they will not last very long. I have had the 4l60e in my silverado currently, in my 95 zr2 and the older 700r4 in my s10 baja back in the early 90's. This is why i laughed at a person who thought i was crazy to flush and do a complete oil change at 36,000 miles! You can never be to safe with a 4l60e, they will not hold up if you do not take very good care of them!

If your lifted and not re-geared for proper tire size, then there's your issue. Still should have gotten more than 40,000 miles. Regardless of what people say, the 4L60e trans is a good trans. There's always a bad apple in the basket. I've gotten many many miles out of the 4L60e trans without issue. Fluid swaps at 50,000 miles and kept on going.

Hopefully you don't need a full re-build and it's something else.

My 2000 did. I never touched the tranny fluid and I am not exactly light footed. I also towed my boat with it for 5 years. It had 92K miles on it when I sold it to my brother. He hasn't touched it either and it still shifts like new at about 115K miles.

I beat the hell out of my 2000 silverado from 100-130K. burnouts 4wd launchs for fun mudding and I was running goodyear MTR 34s. Lost a rear end put a locker in. Custom blackbear performance tune. Loved it. Do you still have factory powertrain 100k miles 10 year?. 3000$ for a new tranny is ridiculous. Look on ebay you can get "built" ones for $700. I know a local guy who will build a blown tranny all up for a supercharger for $1700 and thats on the expensive side.
