Mark Martin's #6 Ford failed post-race inspection, measuring about an eighth of an inch below the minimum height. The win and points will likely stand, given NASCAR's recent history on such infractions, but the driver could face penalties. NASCAR is expected to announce sanctions, if any, early in the week.(ThatsRacin.com)(5-26-2002)

I read about this last night.  I kinda figured not too much would come of it, since they never do too much on these type of things.  Maybe fine him and the team, or something.

They'll fine the crew chief a few thousand bucks and that'll be it.  This happens a whole lot more than one would think it should, I can think of several of these incidents over the past year.

ever notice how every time a car is low it's an  "8th of a inch."

nascar needs to get off their butt and go on and drop the fines and face it that a car will settle during the race, or at least make every car an "8th of an inch" lower

JP called it.  I little more than a FEW thousand though.  I don't remember some of the other crew cheif's fines being that high.

NASCAR has announced that Ben Leslie, crew chief of the #6 Viagra Ford, received a $50,000 fine for a rule violation found during post-race inspection following Sunday’s Coca-Cola Racing Family 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. Leslie was penalized under Section 12-4-T in the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series rule book, "Any car that is found to be under the specified height requirement after the completion… of the race." The minimum height requirement is 51 inches - the No. 6 car was approximately 1/8 of an inch too low.(ThatsRacin.com)(5-28-2002)

Anybody ever wonder why the fines are not the same for everybody when the infractuions are the same??

The crew chief for Mark Martin was fined $50,000 by NASCAR on Tuesday because Martin's winning car in the Coca-Cola 600 did not pass post-race inspection.

Matt Kenseth's crew was fined $30,000 because his Ford was too low following his February win at Rockingham.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team was fined $25,000 last year when his Chevrolet was too low in inspection after he won at Talladega.

I wonder if the "stiffness" of the fine had anything to do with the fact that Mark Martin said he was going to split the million dollar bonus with his entire crew???

On top of the springs settling, wouldnt it seem plausible you could lose an 1/8" of tire?  Those cars are flying around that dang track.

Don't really see whats so hard to understand about the increasing $$$ of the penalty.  The penalty was the same for the whole 2001 season, but now they are trying to get the point across that the teams might want to start compensating for this issue a bit more.  There is plenty of room on the go/no-go gauge for them to start with the car an 1/8" higher at the start of the race just in-case.

It was obvious the smaller penalties weren't doing any good, so maybe they will get the point now....

This isn't the only time this happens.  I think NASCAR just makes them up as they go.  They need to have some consistenty in their fines.
