Rear Axle Id?

is there anyway to ID what gears a rear axle has without takin the cover off and counting the teeth? Im lookin at a used 3.73 thats at a junk yard, but since its not on the truck anymore, i cant spin the tires or anything.

check your RPO codes in the glove box or driver's door panel. I think the code should start with a G. Example: My truck RPO code is GU6 which is 3.42s

you are right, but since its not on the truck, and its at a junk yard, they probably have no idea where it came from. just wanted to see if i could tell from lookin at it

You can do a little math..Spin the axle one time and at the same count the # of rotations of the pinion shaft/U-joint.From there it's a mathmatical equation...

I have to admit that I am pretty impressed with some of you guys out there.... one day you are scouting around a junk yard... and the next day you have a 'new' axle installed in your truck..... I can assure you that nothing gets done that fast around my place... good for you!

on my 10 bolt there was a number of the passenger side of the housing between the fill plug and pinion seal it corresponds to the ratio if you have some book,(it was too greasy to read title) not sure on this, but thats what the people at the junkyard where doing when i was looking for my 3.73 rear.
