Group 48 Battery

I believe there have been a few members that have replaced the group 48 with a 34/78 battery. If you have done this were there any clearance issues or modifications that were needed to accommodate the different size. Also if you have any pictures showing how the battery was installed I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Brandon, I put in a 34/78 Deka Intimidator battery into my 07nbs. Fits right in and stays in place with stock hold down.

What's the purpose of the swap? I see both of your vehicles aren't that old so I know it wasn't due to a failure?

On my 09, I notice it doesn't always seem to be charging the greatest? It is over 14 at start-up but drops to about what I am guess as 12 1/2-13?

Would my truck have the 48 installed from the factory? Thanks.

Whats the advantage of going to the 34/78? Are the CCA's higher?

Yep...48-6YR is standard,48-7YR was optional.

This battery is better hands down plus it's an AGM. 785cca and 120 resv cap. It turns the truck over faster than the stock battery. The headlights are brighter when you unlock the truck(truck off). I can't remember the specs of the oem one. I know almost for a fact that mine wasn't going to last another year. It discharged really easy once while listening to the radio at low volume with the truck off. I never did that again and the battery wasn't the same after that. Yes it was properly charged. Plus at the price of this new one it was a no brainer.

The standard 48-6YR is 600 CCA,The optional "HD" 48-7YR is 730 CCA.

Would you happen to have any pictures of how the terminals mounted and the clearance between the fender brace?

I don't have pics of it in the truck. Look at this pdf for some specs. Mine is the 9a78dt. It has dual terminals, side and top. In the pdf it is exactly like the bottom one. When you put it in the truck, the terminals will be closer to the engine as opposed to the fender. So you will have plenty of slack if you want to upgrade the terminals. If I have a chance I'll take pics tomorrow. It fits like a glove if that's what you are worried about.

The newer trucks have a new "feature" that actively monitors the voltage of the battery and will alter the voltage delivered from the alternator to the battery to prevent overcharging. What you are seeing is the way the system is supposed to work.

FWIW,

A Deka 9AGM48 "Exact Fit" is another good choice for the GMT900's. 760cca w/120 min res, in an AGM type, for about $125.

+1 I put a Napa BAT 9848 (Deka) in my YD and it is a direct replacement except much more cold cranking power and reserve (760 and 120). Instantly noticed how much faster the starter spun when starting it up. It is an AGM type which I like. I used to run Optima but their quality is not what it used to be. We'll see how this deka holds up but so far I'm impressed.
