97 C1500 Not Firing

Recommended Posts

I have a 1997 GMC C1500 with the 5.7 motor.

I recently pulled the gas tank to patch a hole. I reconnected the tank and all wires (double checked to make sure wires and hoses were reconnected properly). I go to start the truck and it would rotate but not start.

I pulled the filter and started the pump up and it was pushing gas through the system. I replaced the filter with a new filter. Engine would still not fire.

I pulled the ignition coil and brought it to get tested. It tested out fine and while I was at the auto parts store I picked up a distributor cap and rotor.

Got home and reassembled everything and it would still not fire.

Any ideas?

I would suspect something with the fuel system as that was what you were working on.

It was running ok before you worked on this correct?

Try spraying some starting fluid into the throttle body and see if that gets it to respond...

Ahhh ha!

Fuel problem of some sort.

Check fuel pressure/volume past fuel filter. (Maybe dislodged gunk when moving tank around?)

Check fuel gauge to be sure it is working (electrical connections ok).

Also there is a fuel pressure regulator.

And check fuses. Especially any fuse having to do with the fuel injectors. Check in owner's manual for fuses section.

Full fuel system service...

Then also if you are doing a lot of engine cranking, be sure to keep the battery fully charged. The electronic stuff does not like a low battery!

yea think the problem came down to low fuel pressure. going to pull the fuel pump tomorrow and check the strainer. getting a dmm and checking relays and fuses also.

Might want to look inside the tank while you have the pump out and see if there is any gunk in the bottom.

Don't use a match! :)

Well it could have decided to go out BEFORE you removed the tank the first time!

well don't feel too bad for me. i drive a bagged truck and the tank is secured in the bed so it's easy access. i have had problems cranking the truck before so it's probably been slowly dying. thanks for all your help bro!
