Grip72 Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 so i want to change my tranny filter/fluid this weekend so I called a GM dealership for a price quote. They said $107 for JUST the filter! (or $250 for them to replace it as well as a flush and new fluid) So I called up Canadian Tire and they said their filters are $18-25. I even called another franchise to confirm cause it sounded so cheap. I have replaced filters before I just haven't paid for them. Now, is there a big difference in quality between the two filters? my truck has high kms. it's a 2000 5.3L with just shy of 280,000kms. Would you go for the GM one or would the Canadian Tire one suffice? oh crap, i guess i'll need a new gasket as well. forgot about that
Erichcb Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Think the dealership is screwing with you. When I wanted to change the filter and trans. fluid on the yukon denali I went to the dealership and go the part number and went online and purchaced the filter and gasket for about $20.00 and then bought some GM IV trans fluid and changed it myself.
V8nuts Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 My dealer wants $199 for just the tranny fluid change. I did not ask about the filter I assumed they include that . It is like a oil change it includes the filter
WilliamBos Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 The dealer I used did not change the filter, they flushed through it. That was at 100,000kms. I am going back to get the same thing done again @ 150,000kms.
Spurshot Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 When my 99 2500 hit 50,000 miles, I took it to the dealer for the trans service. Supposed to be this new reverse flush that was so cool they advertised it at $145 and said it was "cheap" at that price. Took it in at 7:00 am, left it, dealer said 4-5 pm it'd be ready. Drove the wife's car to work after dropping her off at work 10 miles in the opposite direction. Called dealer after work. Dealer said not ready, try tomorrow. Drove wife to work again next day. Afternoon, went by dealer, dealer said it wasn't ready. Called Enterprise and rented a car. Next afternoon (Friday), stopped by dealer, not ready again, told me Monday it'd be ready. Pissed now. Spoke with Svc Mgr, asked WTF could be taking this long, technobabble, no good answer. Came back Monday afternoon, mechanic drove up in svc lane with my truck. I couldn't stand it, I openned the hood to look at WTF they were doing under the hood for nearly a week. Found the under hood insulation sopping wet with trans fluid, right fenderwell wet with trans fluid, same behind the headlight/radiator support. Got steamed, called the svc mgr over, read him the riot act, told him a week and a rental car for dumping trans fluid all over my truck was rediculous and that I wanted a new under hood insulation blanket. He agreed to get the insulation. Came back next day to get the insulation, svc mgr said to leave the truck and they'd put it in. I laughed at him and said just give me the part and that they'd never touch my truck or any other vehicle I owned again. An afternoon of disassembling parts off the truck and washing with Simple Green and I had most of the oil cleaned off. F*%^k that reverse flush crap and the dealer it rode in on. Next changes were 'drain/drop the pan and change the filter' type and not by the dealer. BTW, the dealer charges about $75 for the pan gasket on a 4L80, granted it's rubber coated metal and reuseable.
green 788 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Agree... the reverse flush is a scam. You need to replace the filter regularly if you want your tranny to last.
Grip72 Posted July 21, 2009 Author Posted July 21, 2009 yeah it was done at about 255,000kms and now has almost 280,000kms. i'll replace it when i get a free weekend. thanks guys i like the sounds of paying $20 better haha
