Oil Filters For Truck

Recommended Posts

Is there an approved list of oil filters for the 6.2 liter engine (2007 Yukon Denali)? Which one would you recommend? I'm going to do my first oil change on the truck, going to Castrol 5w-30 synthetic, does the type of oil filer make a difference with this oil?

Thanks

The type of filter will not be determined by the oil you use unless you are planning on running it for extended drain intervals. If so, you have only a few choices. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are two that I know of that offer filters for extended drain intervals. If you are not planning on running for extended periods, you have many choices. I personally use CARQUEST Premium filters supplied by Wix. Wix filters are also avail in their own brand name and at NAPA in their Gold line. I would also have no issue using an AC Delco filter. There are many other brands out there to choose from. Some are very low end filters that are not acceptable in my opinion and others would be fine. I do not think you want to use an oil filter with a production cost of well under $1.00 on a truck as nice as yours.

Although the following comment will likely bring on some replies, the general consensus on this forum is to avoid Fram filters. They do a great job at marketing but the internal construction of their filters leaves a lot to be desired.

i'd take the Delco over K&N any day. IMO. Also, look at the German Castrol 0w-30...it's a group IV PAO true full synthetic....regular syntec is a group III just like mobil 1, pennzoil, valvoline, etc.... Royal Purple, Redline, German Castrol, and Amsoil are the only easily consumber available group IV or V full syns on the market.

There is some independent data online about filters, with comparisons. Delco is rated as one of the best. I will try to find it and post it.

I don't thik GM lists Castrol as an approved lubricant anymore. Pretty sure it was removed from their list sometime in 2007.

Castrol GTX is back on GMs approved list as of august, 7 2007. I posted this list last week.

I've been using K&N oil filters (NOT their air filters) exclusively on a number of vehicles for over 5 years with zero problems. What I like about them is that they filter very well, have a high flow rate and are built like a tank. Hold a K&N filter in one hand and just about any other brand in the other and see what I mean. The K&N filter will almost always be noticeably heavier than the competition. The 1" nut on top makes install and removal a breeze. I've heard good things about M1 oil filters too but have not used them.

The best place for oil and filter info is...

There are many viewpoints but many many facts.

Generally speaking, Fram is no good.

The Walmart brand has high ratings when running 5K or less on oil change intervals (OCI).

Also, some thought has it that running synthetic on short OCI is a waste of $. Unless you have a specific need like the Ice Truckers drivers.

I run Castrol GTX 20W50 and Wallymart filter in/on my 4.3.

But then, it changes its' own oil since I have to add a quart every 180-200 miles. :(
