Is It Worth Getting Onstar Fixed?

I've had my truck a little over 2 months and OnStar has never worked. Each time I hit the blue button to attempt my introductory call to get it set up, it will just beep and never establish a connection. I'm not an OnStar fan and I won't subscribe to the service after the free trial so I really could careless if it works or not. The dealership sure is concerned about it though (do they get more $$ once I activate the service or what???). They call me about once a week to bring it in to get it fixed.

So I finally have time to give up my truck for a day to let them work on it. The dealership is going to pick-up my truck from work and leave me a car to drive for the day which is nice. But they said they have to "re-flash the memory" or something like that as part of the fix. My truck runs perfect right now so I am concerned they are going to go in and start messing around to fix OnStar and jack something else up. Should I mess with having it fixed at all or is my conern about something else getting messed up exaggerated and nothing to worry about? :dunno:

the dealership should have set this up for you...with you in the truck when you bought it...I would get it fixed (warranty) in case you want to sell...the next buyer might want it...I like On-Star though...good luck...

They're probably more concerned with liability - they advertise that the vehicle will notify OnStar if the air bags deploy. If it doesn't they could probably be sued.

If it's free, then get it fixed.

Yeah I guess you guys have a point...I would be silly not to do it since is free under warranty. I'm probably more paranoid than I should be about something else getting screwed up in the process.

if you truck it's an 08 like mine, I'm sure it came with the one free year sound and safe plan from onstar, they can unlock your truck if you leave your keys inside and can also help locate it if it gets stolen plus some other usefull things.....also you dealer should help you set it up, I thing since its free the only thing it will take you is a trip to the dealer....

I'd get them to extend the free period another 2 monthes since it hasn't worked for that long.

Yes sir...the dealership already said that it would be extended for 2 more months and they were able to add 100 extra minutes to the plan for the hassle. My salesman picked up the truck and left me a demo Acadia to drive so I have been pleased with their customer service so far.

Good deal. Might just wanna drop a dealer name to let others around here know. There are still some good dealers, some good salesmen, and then there are just some real bad ones.

I would get it fixed so you can use the rest of the year trial period, and this way in case you did decide in the future to activate it, then it should be good to go. The dealership should not have let the vehicle leave the lot without you logging into the "blue" button and ensuring that it works.

You're right....Thompson GMC in Springfield, MO.

This is my second vehicle I have purchased from them. I have been treated fairly each time with great customer service. Same salesman on each vehicle and nothing but good things to say about him. Each purchase they have been a couple hundred dollars higher than deals I could have gotten from other dealers but the extra money is worth it to me in exchange for the better service, convenience, and good relationship I have with them. I have purchased from other dealers further away based on price alone in the past but I've realized my local dealer closest to my house is really good to deal with so I don't mind spending a little extra to keep my business with them. Customer service really is everything in my eyes and the best way to earn repeat business from me.

Dropped the Acadia loaner off last night and picked up the truck. OnStar is working and all is well! The technician did say it took them most of the afternoon though. They were still writing up the receipt with the repairs that were made but I was in a hurry so they are going to mail me the receipt. I'll take a look at it and see what all they had to do to get it working.
