Getting Clunking Sound After A Stop

after i stop at a red light or a stop sign then let off the brake, i get a clunking sound coming from the rear is it the brakes it happens when i let go of the brake and hit the gas.

Is this on your '96? Is that the only time it does it?

Couple things come to mind. GM's slip yoke causing the driveline clunk or u-joints.

Repack the slip yoke with grease, and inspect the u-joints while you have the driveshaft down and see if the noise goes away.

its a 96 sierra 5.0l only happens after a stop,when i come to a complete stop then let off the brake and go back on the gas thats when i get a clunk sound thats the only time it dose it thats why i thought it may be the rear brakes

Do you feel it? Like a bump? Or is it just sound?

Can you duplicate it again by just applying the brakes and then releasing again, without the vehicle moving?

So far the things I would check would be:

Slip yoke/spline for proper lubrication.

Drive shaft u joints and carrier bearing.

The differential for excessive play

Brake shoes and drums

the last owners son blow the drive shaft so they had to replace it with a uesed one and the rear brakes were making noise before but it went away thinking the problem fixed its self maybe not.

Pull the drums then and start looking things over of you think it's the brakes.

Not sure if this would be related or not, but my 01 was doing the same thing, BUT it also would clunk when going over small bumps or speed bumps, etc. So I assumed it was the suspension. I took it to the Chevy dealer and they said it was most likely the slip yoke. They called me and said that my rear end was shot. The pinion bearings and gears and all needed to be replaced. It was like a $2800 repair. Luckily it was all covered by my extended warranty.

$2800... You can have it done for $1200 pretty easy if you shop around... but I guess thats a non-point because of your warranty.

My truck does the same thing. I have heard it since i got it (have only put 500 miles on it, has 35,500 on it). I only notice also while at a stop sign and then taking off. It happens mostly when the front end is pointing downhill some and does it exactly from when my foot is in between the brake and gas pedal. So pretty quickly after I let off the brake.

I am going to take it to the dealer when it gets close to 36,000 for an oil change (going to go with Mobil 1 synthetic). Then I will ask them about the clunk and see what they say and have them take a look while its up on the hoist. If anyone figures it out before hand I will tackle it myself if not I will see what they think and let you know if it fixes it. I hope its not my rear end needing anything, that would be terrible with the amount of miles I have on it!

Btw, its a 2003 regular cab short box, Z-71

I have an 02 Suburban K2500 with the same problem. I assumed it was the brakes or suspension. Has anyone found a definitive answer to this problem? Mine only does it on hard stops when there is sufficient weight shift after stopping.
