Brake Light Problems

Hello everyone. I have dutifully searched and read all posts about brake light problems before posting this. Nothing seems to quite fit my circumstances. I just bought this 97 silverado C1500 and discovered today (after a 560 mile trip yesterday) that I have no brake lights. I just replaced both bulbs in the cab stop lamp today. I have checked both fuses, on the side of the dash, and under the hood. I have also replaced the 40amp breaker in the box under the hood. I have flashers, and all turn signals and running lights work. I cannot make the flashers stop by pressing on the brake, and none of the three brake lights come on. I have tested this with the lights in all positions, and while cycling the multi-function switch, still nothing. Oddly enough, the cruise works fine and cancels when I touch the brake pedal. Is it possible that the actual switch could be bad/misadjusted and still allow the cruise to cancel? What should I try next?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I read your post and noted that your truck is a 98 and mine is a 97. Did the switch fix your issues? Was it difficult to get adjusted?

Robert, thanks for the info. Flipped the old switch up from the master cylinder push rod, then I got a long screwdriver and pried the old switch off. The retainer clip popped off, then the switch siid off the shaft. found the clip and it still snapped back on to hold the new switch after installation. I now have brake lights!

thanks everyone

I read this forum and it maybe what is wrong with my 1996 suburban k2500. i am not a mechanic nor a man, but do work on my own vehicles. this will be my fifth gmc and love them. but this tail light thing is killing me. i think i found the switch you guys are talking about, is it located on the top of the brake pedal rod? I can not see it, i can only feel it. I can push up on it and it flips up. My problem is, some two bit fool, installed a brake box for towing in my 1996, (in my 1999 suburban, there was a plug), on my 1996, some one spliced into wires under the dash. So I have tail lights, turn signals, but no flashers, and no brake lights. The top brake light works but not the two lower ones. My husband believes a woman needs to know how to work on her own car, and needless to say after fighting with this truck all day, he may sleep on the couch or better yet in the barn with the horses. He told me to unhook the brake box for towing and see if that would solve the problem. it did not, then he said disconnect the wiring harness the goes to the plug you would hook up to your camper or trailer, did that, no good. From what I can see, who ever hooked up the brake box for towing under the dash spliced into a white wire above the flasher fuse, the wire this person added is hot when brakes are pressed . Now growing up with a father who was the worlds greatest Jerry rigger,(no offence to any one named Jerry, just what my dad called it) I could probably run a wire to the back and just like the person who oringinally put in the towing system splice the wire in, but I really want to do this right so no problems later. Any one out there got an answer?
