Synthetic Fluids Question?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am currently running a full synthetic in the crankcase and I'm thinking of switching all of the fluids over. I was telling a customer this( I run a restaurant) who works at a local service station and he told me that the older vehicles aren't set up for it. Since I am still a novice I am always willing to listen to all angles and research them. He said it had to do with the "old fashioned" cork- style gaskets could/ will start to leak. Your thoughts? I will not ask a brand of product because I have already researched that and everyone has a favorite, and all others are trash. Brand loyalty is key in all products! Why do I drive, like, GMs? Always been around them.

I have always used synthetic oil, Mobil 1, in all of my vehicles. I have only owned 1 vehicle that was brand new and have never had an oil leak develop that wasn't already there. Most recently I bought my 98 Z71 with 134000 miles on it and have since switched over the oil, gear oil in the diff's, and synthetic trans fluid in it without an issue. Definitely lower operating temps since I have done this and you would be fine to do the same.

I started using synthetics back in 1975 and never had any problems with oil leaks People just like repeat unfounded tales. My Mother's 93 Lumina has been on synthetic since its first oil change back in 1993. Still running today and there are not leaks in the engine or the transmission.

My 1992 Chevy PU (plow truck) in still running synthetic oil since new and I sold the truck in 2007 to a young kid who is beating the crap out of it, e.g. big tires, loud exhaust, etc. Even after plowing snow for all those years, still on original transmission.

I didn't state any of those old myths that are probably untrue. All I said is If its lasted 17 years and who knows how many miles then leave it alone.

But, they will also last just as long on dino oil.

I've driven older model vehicles only, 56 Buick, 69 72 VWs, 74 83 Fords, 69 International. and my current 88 GMC. I have used synthetic in all of them without a problem.

I put 190k mild miles on my old 92 before the rebuild last year. It was run on Valvoline 5-30 regular oil and my engine guy said it was still nice and pretty inside when he tore it down. If you may be inclined, you can use the syn-blend oils...

Just my $.02's --Mike

I run synthetic in all my vehicles, 95 gmc 454, 160,00, 96 chevy blazer 208,000, 97 f250 powerstroke, 180,00, 2010 camaro ss, and never had any problems. Conventional oil may work just fine, but i just feel better using synthetic.
