Engine Swap No Egr

My 2001 4.8 with 170K miles bit the dust (water in oil cant find the leak). I picked up a very low mile 4.8 (2002 model) from a salvage yard. Looks like brand new. Donor vehicle was wrecked on 03 with less than 30K miles on it. Motor has been sitting on shelf since then. Prior to installing I note that the 2002 model motor has no EGR valve and no place to install EGR valve. I have 2 options....one is to stick it in and hope that the lack of EGR valve doesnt screw up my computer and throw codes etc... OR Pull the intake and fuel system off of my old motor and use it.

I know that all my old stuff (including the EGR valve) is good because my old motor still runs like a top cept for the nasty loss of water and milky oil issue. BUT Given my druthers, I would rather have a good working fuel system/intake etc with only 30K miles on it......

Has anybody any idea what I can expect without the EGR? My 2001 has it and probably has tyo have it to run right....but this 2002 motor obviously did not require it? Is there a way to may this round peg fit the square hole?

Will complete the install tonight I hope.

No where to plug the Wire to on the new motor?

You suggest taking the plenum out of the old motor?

Yes take the plenum, injectors, sensors, throttle body etc. from you old engine and install on your newer engine. Components change and are not always compatible with different model years. I bet the new engine is DBW so the throttle body wont work.

DBW didn't show up in full force until 2003 so it's not an issue for him.

OP:

if you don't reinstall all of the egr components then it will set a code, you should have no problems using the parts off of your original motor. You certainly want to keep your fuel injectors - GM swapped injectors around that time and you will have fueling issues if the new ones are different from the old ones. all of those issues could be taken car of with a custom tune, but for what you are doing, what's the point?

quick question though: why didn't you go for a 5.3L? it's a direct swap and it would run fine even without a computer update.

You guys are dead on:

I found the knock sensor...it was trapped under the plenum. It is a little different than the 01 BUT the plug is the same.

Got all that crap done and it wouldnt fire a lick (fuel) Swapped injectors YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 01 an 02.

Runs like a top now BUT...the dang starter doesnt disengage when the motor is running.... after trying to shim it (I am showing my age here) I learn that the 01 and 02 have a different part number for the starter....

Why not a 5.3? Well... I'll tell ya.

The junkyard had a dozen 4.8's and 1 5.3 The 5.3 had 100K miles on it and this particular 4.8 had less than 30K.

The 5.3 sells as a running take out for $850. The 4.8 sold for $500.

I have been 100% satisfied with the performance of the 4.8 for the whole 167K miles - -and I am expecting this truck to hold up for about another 30K or so.

By the way... I havent posted on this site for awhile: But I bought this truck in 2001 brand spankin new and loved every bit of it all the way up until 100K. I passed it on to my son in law and bought me a new 07 LTZ Silverado Crewcab 4WD.

I miss my old truck and I just flat dont like the new one as much as I did the 01 extended cab. I like the 4 full doors, but it sits too high. I am just not in love with my 07 as I was with my 01. I only have 40K on the LTZ and I am probably going to sell it on the cheap and find me an "old style" 3/4 ton. I dont drive my truck every day anymore and it just sits until it is time to tow the boat or haul some crap around... SO if there is anyone out there wanting to upgrade and unload a well maintained 02-06 with a diesel or the big gasser..... let me know. Somewhere in the 100K mile range ok...no 200K's though
