Locking Tailgate

I've got a 2007 silverado classic (1500) and recently put a tonneau cover on (BakFlip gen II, I'm happy with it so far). I'd like to upgrade the current tailgate handle so that I can lock it (like on the avalanches). I've looked at the "pop and lock" system that a lot of vendors seem to offer and it didn't thrill me, I'd like to get something OEM if avalible. Does anyone have an suggestions? Does GM have a locking tailgate handle (from gmpartsdirect or something) that I could replace mine with?

I got mine with my truck (I bought it used). It is from bully. Only downside, whoever installed it botched the job.

Bully tailgate lock... Looks factory except for the key-hole in the center. They are very easy to install so you should be able to do this yourself if you are even remotely handy.

I guess I am spoiled. My SD came with a key lock and now I want to make it remote so I can unlock it like the doors. I had a remote unit on my 99 Sierra, but it was not very durable.

Bully tailgate lock... Looks factory except for the key-hole in the center. They are very easy to install so you should be able to do this yourself if you are even remotely handy.

I say he botched it because the hole he cut out around the key cylinder is ugly looking, the black plastic around the entire handle got knocked off, and the entire cylinder seized up not long after I got it. How much of it was his fault not a clue, but I would assume they are all related.

Go to gmpartsdirect, 17802393 is the part number for the locking tailgate for 2007 and up NBS Silverado and Sierra. There are 3 bolts you need to take off, pull out the cover, pull out the handle assembly, and install the new in reverse. Put YOUR ignition key in the key hole, and turn it like 3-4 time until it stops. You have now set the lock, to match your key.

The whole process takes 30min, pretty easy, and factory part for cheap - $41.50!!!

Metro, the problem with that is he has an '07 "classic". But, thanks because I want to change mine out when I get the cover I want. I've got the NBS.

I just opted for the Bully tailgate lock for my '03. Sierra I had a pop n lock on my '04 and although it did the job I am hoping the bully is alittle better when I get it.

Go to gmpartsdirect, 17802393 is the part number for the locking tailgate for 2007 and up NBS Silverado and Sierra. There are 3 bolts you need to take off, pull out the cover, pull out the handle assembly, and install the new in reverse. Put YOUR ignition key in the key hole, and turn it like 3-4 time until it stops. You have now set the lock, to match your key.

The whole process takes 30min, pretty easy, and factory part for cheap - $41.50!!!

Dang, 2007 NBS and up huh? This was the type of deal I was thinking (and hoping) for my '07 classic.

Not sure if the 07 is the same as 06 - but I bought an OEM tailgate lock for my 06 crew cab - - - its not keyed to my ignition key (seperate small key) but works great. Dont know the part nbr offhand though.....

I was considering something like that too. You can buy good kits for either a manual or a power tailgate lock for the 07 classic (I have an 05) at summitracing and you can read installation instructions for the power one online. It doesn't look very difficult.

I have a keyed lock. I hardly ever use it (especially since the tonneau cover is off for the winter to fit the snowmobile) and I find that aerodynamics being what they are the keyhole fills up with salt and dirt. I would recommend spending the extra money for the power lock.
