  1. Cutting into the wiring would be a hard no for me. I did that one time to a new truck and ended up regretting it.
  2. Wow, it's a sad world out there! I live in N WI. I monitor boat landings. A couple weeks ago I noticed a guy left his keys in the ignition in his truck when he went out on the lake. Clearly, he isn't concerned about theft. I'm sure there is plenty of crime up here but nowhere near as much as the big cities.
  3. I still do my own oil changes, brake work, spark plugs and any other minor repairs that I'm capable of on my vehicles. I keep spreadsheets of all the work I do or have done, milage, date and costs. When I bought my truck, the dealer gave me a free membership to Carfax. Anything dealers do, shows up in there. I also add maintenance records for anything I do.
  4. Got my truck back. They referred to Bulletin 20-NA-218. Had to reprogram the Engine Control Module. They thought something might have been automatically downloaded that caused it, but I don't even have an OnStar antenna. 20-NA-218 1..5 (nhtsa.gov) 2020 Siverado Crank No Start Bulleton.pdf
  5. Yes it is
  6. Took me 3 tries to realize an adjustable hitch was the way to go.
  7. I bought 5 gallons of Surface Shield and a sprayer. Doing the truck once every 2 years as recommended.
  8. I think I have it too. Dropped the truck off at the dealership yesterday after experiencing the crank-no-start problem for a 2nd time in 2 weeks. They won't even look at it till April 22nd. Haven't had battery draining issues though.
  9. I backed into a tree last fall and broke a piece of trim on mine. Took about 10 minutes to remove that piece. Then I found out that GM doesn't sell parts for them.....only complete mirrors. Plus, there's about 20 different options for mirrors, so getting the right one is no treat either.
  10. I mostly park mine in the winter. In N WI it's plenty cold. While I have not checked voltages, it has never failed to start. I have had more problems with my 2 Hondas. I have put a battery maintainer on it a couple of times. I do own a bunch of those that I keep on just about everything I have parked except the truck. Oops...wrong post.....old age!
  11. I use mine all the time. I pulled a muscle in my leg last year. It bothered me for about 6 months. I wouldn't have been able to get in or out of the box w/o it.
  12. When I was 21 years old, I was freshly married with a new baby. I was working 44 hours a week as a mechanic at a GMC Diamond REO garage. I also worked parttime pumping gas at a gas station. On top of that I was going to college fulltime. My 'weekend' was between 4:30 Saturday when I got off at the garage and 4:00 pm Sunday when I went to the gas station. That time was spent keeping up on homework. While it was a necessity at the time, I swore I'd never do it again. Now I'm retired....best job ever!
  13. My cousin spent his career as a service manager at a big GMC garage. He told me once that the dealer has the ability to warranty anything whether it's technically still under warranty or not. Totally up to the dealer's digression. With no transmission dipstick (something I was not aware of till today......thanks again all for the great info), I hope they do better filling the transmissions than they do the differentials.
  14. This will work for me. Ordered one this morning. I too have vision issues. I love this site! I find out all kinds of things. That tailgate assist handle that I found out about and installed was a life saver last summer after I pulled a muscle in my leg. I'd have never been able to get in the box w/o it.
  15. I didn’t even know there was a tailgate fiasco. Mine works fine the last time I checked.
  16. My wife actually likes them. Told her "Fine! I'll order a set!". Told me that I have to check with my grandson 1st since he has already claimed dibs on my truck after I die (probably shouldn't turn my back on him ). Actually, he is my best buddy. He and I are always working on mechanical projects together including rebuilding a tractor engine and swapping an ATV engine.
  17. Back in the 70s I bought a set of JCWhitney hubcaps for my van. I think they looked better.
  18. I remember the 3 hour trip home on 2 lane roads when I 1st picked up my truck. Butt was sore. Thought maybe I'd made a mistake buying it. Bought a cushion to sit on. Lowered the tire pressures as much as possible. Now I don't even notice. No longer use the cushion, Biggest problem I have now is if I'm not using cruise control, I'm always going faster than I think I am. Going 80 feels like 50. I do pull a trailer with a skid steer or tractor at times. My pressures are set about 5 lbs above minimum. Haven't noticed any swaying problems pulling the trailer. Overall happy with everything.
  19. A friend of mine never failed to walk....no matter how good the deal was. He never once had a dealer not get back to him.
  20. I got thru my trip w/o needing air, but now the tire needs air. Decided to try the Airmoto. The SUV tire was at 24.5 PSI and is supposed to be at 33. Let's just say that if you are over 50, you probably don't have enough time left to do 4 tires. Extremely slow. Won't even consider it for the truck.
  21. Last summer my neighbor had a dealer get stuck trying to pull his pontoon out. I had a small strap and was able to pull the truck (Ford ) and pontoon out easily with the small strap I had. The boat landing I work at is steep and not in very good shape (by design - property owners prefer it not be used). Because there is a lot of money on that lake, owners tend to have big boats. I've helped a couple of them. I decided to invest in a bigger strap and D-hooks. The strap is 35K lbs. I always have them with me. A couple of years ago, I got lost and ended up on this backwoods road in the middle of nowhere. A guy came running out on the road and flagged me down. Turns out he was stuck in the woods. Had no phone coverage and next closest place was about 5 miles away. Fortunately, he had a heavy duty tie down strap we were able to use. Got him out easily too and decided I would never be caught w/o a strap again.
  22. I agree Marriages have ups and downs. Our daughter was unhappy because her husband wasn't giving her enough attention. She divorced him. Their 3 kids were teenagers. It was devastating for them. We tried unsuccessfully to get her to wait till they were all 18. It ended in a very ugly divorce. That was probably about 7 years ago and ever since, she has spent all her time desperately trying unsuccessfully to find a new husband....just like the old one.
  23. We've lived rural for the majority of our 53 years of marriage. Right now, we live on about 4 acres on a small lake. We have a home and a cabin on the property with a total of 405 feet of frontage. There are only a handful of places on the lake and only one other year-round resident that we never see or hear. It's quiet in the summer and quieter in the winter. Being in N WI winters can be tough, but we've learned to deal with them. Last winter was the snowiest on record. By this time, we had over 3 foot on the ground. This year is just the opposite. We only have 2 inches and had only the 3rd 'brown Christmas' in the 82 years of keeping records. Temperatures have been extremely moderate this winter too. 25 degrees right now. We've had as low as -43 degrees since living here. Crime is minimal. Our house is not visible from the country road that has maybe a handful of cars a day. Life is good!
  24. My daughter had her SUV broke into and her backpack including a brand-new laptop, some cash and her glasses stolen at a MN Wild Hockey game last night. Reminds me why I choose to live in the middle of nowhere.
  25. I agree. The only thing we currently owe on is my truck. That will be paid off this year. When it comes to vehicles, I generally run them till they die. My last truck was a 99 Silverado that I bought new in 98. I take good care of them. We live on a small lake about 50 miles south of Duluth MN. No Starbucks. shopping or even decent restaurants here. Removes temptation. Winters can be brutal though. We have been taking a couple of cruises/bus trips a year to get away from that. Just got back from a Carribean cruise. Came back with Covid. Turns out 3 of our last 4 trips involved Covid. Done with that! That will save us around $15K a year. As I get older, I'm finding I want less stuff and I want to travel less. I don't know if we can totally live on Social Security, but we can get pretty close. I send the majority of my time making firewood and puttering in my shop. When I retired at 62 my financial guy cautioned me that with people living longer, they require more for retirement. Told him it wasn't a matter of how long I live, but how long I enjoy living. After that I can be broke. 12 years later, even he agrees we're fine.
