2002 Silverado Transmission Swap
gmjunkie22 posted a topic in 1999-2013 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Hey i'm looking for some help on doing a transmission swap in a 2002 Chevy Silverado Here are the specs of my truck: -2002 Silverado automatic transmission -4x4 -v6 4.3 engine Could someone please let me know if I need to find a transmission with the exact year of (2002). Or will other years interchange with no modifications needed. I want to be able to simply swap them. I am getting mixed feed back from the salvage yards around my area. Most of the are saying I have to get a 2002 transmission and others are saying other years will work just fine. Apparently GM changed the part number each year so it adds the confusion perhaps. There is one salvage yard in my area that has a transmission from a 2004 and they are telling me it will work just fine. They said if anything the fly wheel might not work and they said they will provide the fly wheel with the transmission incase it doesn't fit the flywheel thats currently on my 2002 truck. Thanks for any help someone can provide!- 4 replies

WARNING: This is going to be an odd one, and a long shot / shot in the dark to boot. I hope it's not too far off topic, but there just aren't really many forums for this. First things first. I currently am in possession of a pair of Pace Arrow motorhomes, one a 1982 on what I believe is a P20 chassis (6.2 diesel / 16-inch wheels), the other a 1983 on what I believe is a P30 chassis (7.4 gas, 19.5-inch wheels), though I have read this one is likely a P32, not a P30, which I believe only has minor suspension and brake differences. I am not sure which one I will use, or if I can even do what I have in mind. Both have severe roof problems and are too much work to repair properly to be worth it, but run great, and both are extremely low mileage (14k and 65k, respectively). I have seen several 3500s (same cab as 1500 / 2500) with the same 19.5-inch wheel and 7.4L, with an added valance of sorts between the main grille and bumper, suggesting that the cab sits higher and is on a different frame. I have also noticed similarities in rail-to-rail measurements between the P and C/K on chassis diagrams I have downloaded. Auto Zone shows the same body mount kit for the P and C/K for 1983. I have to wonder as well if the late-model U-Haul 26-footers are on a P30/P32 chassis. Even late-model GM cutaway cabs and cab/chassis for U-Haul, small buses and even the Kodiak MDT appear to be the same Express van cab (the G-van's replacement, which was the basis for some box trucks of its vintage). I have also noticed that some of those box trucks had a longer, more raked nose, even though it was a G-van cab. A few pics are attached -- a motorhome similiar to the larger one I have, a "high-boy" 3500 box truck with the extended valance and the same 19.5-inch wheel, and the "Lil' Kenny" kit built for the late-model C/K frame. All of this leads me to believe that a square-body or GMT400 C /K cab would mount on a P chassis with little fuss and muss. Which leads to my main question -- does anyone know if this can be done? Seems like it would work, but I'm hoping someone here has done this before or knows someone who has. I have run across a few similar projects, but could not confirm any of them were finished to the point of a running, driving (and safe) vehicle. The reason I ask such an outlandish question -- I've had a couple ideas here. One was to simply swap a cab / nose from a 73-03 C/K onto the frame. The other idea was a "Lil' Big Rig" kit (scaled down Peterbilt / Kenworth cab built for popular full-size pickup frames). In the event anyone is inspired, the Kenworth version is built specifically for GM, and can be adapted to Dodge, while the Peterbilt version is fitted for use with Ford F-series, though either can be adapted for the other. I'm thinking some modification would be necessary, as the P's steering column sits directly beside the engine. The steering box shows a different part number between the P and C/K, so I wonder if this would be the thing that makes it impossible. However, I wonder if the cab sitting lower might correct this position, or if I would need to change the column / intermediate shaft, or even the steering box itself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to iron out the if's on this idea before I start tearing things apart and find out some technical snag, especially as the Lil Big RIg kits are quite pricey. Would rather have some answers before I start. Kinda thought about yanking the 7.4 and trans from the '83, starting fresh with a used U-Haul, and saving the 7.4 for when the U-Haul's 8.1 gives up. Might be easier, but I like the idea of using what I have if I can. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Okay, I hope all's well here and I can find someone who can help! I need information I can't seem to find. I am in a financial bind and need to replace the motor of my 07 Tahoe. It has thrown a piston through the interior of the block. I was trying to find out if there is a straight plug and play swap from another truck I might use. I just don't have $1500 for a proper 07 Tahoe motor. I can pull a motor in my area for around $400. Problem is there are no 07 Tahoes there, but have found many 5.3l Silverados and a few Older Yukons & Suburbans. All I keep getting is that I have to get vin J motors for it to be a straight swap. The heads of my 07 are fine with the exception of one push rod that I'm in the process of changing! Help! Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey guys, I just bought an LQ4/6.0 out of a 2006 Denali XL Complete Long Block Engine Harness /w ECU Accessories The swap will be going into a 2007 Reg Cab Silverado. Truck came factory with the 4.8L Vortec. My questions go as follows. 1. Would the swap work easier since I have the ECU/ECM that came with it ? 2. 06' Below uses 24x Crank Sens... 07+ 58x Crank Sens... Could it work since i have the ECU/Harness ? 3. Would the truck still start up/drive without unlocking the ECU ? 4. What other things should i be worried about ? 5. What things should I get for the swap if needed ? I will be using a JEGS adapter/4.8 Flexplate to mount the 4l60e to it "4l80 will be put in later"

I'm looking to do a full interior swap/update on my '99 silverado, don't know much about interior fabrication but i'm going to do what I have to in order to make it work. For now I plan on taking everything I can out of a part-out silverado from 2014 or newer and throwing it straight into my truck. If anybody has any tips or prior knowledge from a project of the same nature any help would be appreciated. From what I could find, not many people have documented this sort of thing on YouTube and the ones who have only show off the final product instead of the full process or steps they needed to take in order to get what I'm looking for.

Hey Guys, I have a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV with a 5.3L LMG and a 6L80 Trans (MYC) looking to drop in a 6.2L L9H. As far as I understand it is a direct swap. Would I run in to any issues or codes as far as the L9H not having AFM/DOD? I plan on using the 5.3L PCM and having it re flashed to work with the 6.2 Or do I look for a L94 that has FlexFuel, VVT, AFM like the LMG does?

Looking to swap my “stepless” bumper for a “stepped” bumper. Anyone with a bumper to a 2014-18 rear bumper with step corners and a bumper with sensor spots, contact me. I’m in Lancaster county, PA. My truck is the Sierra painted in Stealth Gray Metallic.

So I bought a used 2014 Sierra SLT All Terrain knowing there were certain aspects that weren’t exactly what I wanted but choosing to sacrifice for mileage and overall package. One of those was that the bumper does not have corner steps by the tailgate. This is proving to be more of a pain than I though especially considering when my current tires are worn I’m swapping to much larger tires and possible a lift. Anybody have ideas or advise on swapping the bumper? Best I’ve seen eBay and a body shop respraying in my body color is best. Am I right?
