Badges And Decals....

Recommended Posts

I asked this question a few weeks ago, but now I can't find the thread anywhere (and I went all the way back to mid-May)....

I am looking at painting my truck later on, and after I'm done I want to put the badges and decals back on. Problem is.... I have no idea how to remove the badges without busting them, and then to put them back on.

It has been 16 years since I last did autobody. I don't think the badges go on the same.

Help!

They're held on with a double sided tape. A very good double sided tape. Your truck is new enough and the badges few enough that it may be easier to buy new badges.

The hard part is alignment when installing them. A friend of mine makes tooling for badge installation by dealers and makers. It's a pain to get all the dimensions right.

Two options to help with removal depending on how they are attached...

Where they have been applied with glue, not double sided tape, use the method below with caution...

You'll need a heat gun and plastic putty knife. Obviously you must be very careful using this method. Place the putty knife under the badge and apply pressure. Start working the heat gun over the badge and as the adhesive gets warm the knife should start lifting the badge. Keep working the gun and knife left to right (or vice versa) until the badge is off.

Where they have been applied with tape...

Take some fishing string and work it back and forth (sawing motion, top to bottom) from one side of the decal to the other. The heat generated by the line cuts through the foam in the tape.

Remove residue from both with some kind of solvent (goo gone, goof off, etc). Clay, seal then wax the area and enjoy.
