ONE_MASTERT Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I just bought a GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab White Diamond Edition. It comes with really nice 20" rims. I traded in my 1997 Chevrolet Silverado (Ext cab Long Bed 7.4L) for it. The Chevy had 255,000 miles and probably had another 100,000 or more in him but the 10MPG highway was not very exciting. With my old truck I never had to worry about someone stealing my tires so I just recently learned that a locking lug nut system exists. My question is: what brand is preferred for locking lug nuts? I've seen Gorilla, McGard and I can get some from GM for $40
cvandegna Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Shouldn't really matter - professional wheel thieves have keys to them all.
emwolb469 Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I really wouldnt think that anyone would go through all that trouble of stealing stock wheels?? I guess there are still some wierdos in this world
longhorn_giant Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 There have been quite a few guys on here who've gotten their stock 20's stolen off their trucks at night with the truck in their driveway. They seem to be really popular, so I made sure I could park in the garage before we bought it
C. Charles Hahn Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 An '09 Sierra with 20s.... meaning the ones with the glued on plastic?
ONE_MASTERT Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 What do you guys think of getting two of them? I've heard that suggested. So, say, one nut is a McGard's locking nut and another is a Gorilla's locking nut. Of course that means I'd have to make sure to keep both of the keys handy. What do you think? I wouldn't be hoping to fully stop thiefs but hopefully deter some or at least slow them down. The rims are 20" chrome-clad aluminum. I didn't notice any sort of plastic; not sure what you meant exactly.
ONE_MASTERT Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 Oh yes I read a couple of posts on here about the 20" wheels getting stolen. I'm sure they can get at least $1,000 for them. Good deal for very little effort. Personally I'd rather have wheels that weren't high risk for being stolen. As long as they roll, it is no matter what they look like. Regret...
07Graystone Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I went with the McGard's +1 Be sure to hide the "key" inside. I have heard theives break in to the cab knowing the key will relatively easy to find.

Look a bit closer... they're an aluminum wheel with a glued-on outer cover that is nothing more than plastic that looks like chrome.

It seems like with two on there it would be more trouble than one. I will take your advice since all this is very new to me. Thank you all for your help. Hmm I will look at the rims a little closer. It is really no matter to me. As long as the wheels work, what does it matter if they have a plastic cover or not. Thanks again guys.
Matt_ Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 I had a handy little kit that allowed me to get wheels locks off.... its just as easy as taking lug nuts off. You'd be surprised how many people lose their keys and need their wheel locks removed. IMO, they're not much of a deterrent. And from what id expect from scumbags who'd try to steal your wheels, if they couldn't get them off they'd probably be pissed and key the hell out of your truck... thus causing more monetary damage than just taking the wheels. If it makes you feel better, get a quality set of gorillas... and don't over think it
