2009 Oil Level Overfill

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2009 Silverado 1500 LT with a 5.3 engine. I have checked the oil several times and I find that it always reads overfilled by about 1/2 of an inch. Is there a special way to check the oil on these trucks, is there a know issue with bad dipsticks or factory overfills? I know that too much oil is almost as bad as not enough. Has anyone ever seen this condition on a new truck?

I've found similar conditions with the 5.3Ls in both of my trucks.... and it seems to fluctuate quite a bit depending on if the engine is up to temp, if it's allowed to sit and have the oil settle back into the pan, etc.

I think GM's dipsticks are just not very accurate anymore. (And you can take that comment however you choose!) :D

Mine was the same when I got it. Just drained 1/2 a quart out so that it was reading full on the dipstick and was done with it.

It does also vary whether engine is warm/cold how long it's been turned off/etc... I still check the oil when it is cold and base it off of that. Could be wrong with the general conciseness but that wouldn't be the first time.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT READING YOU OWNERS MANUAL. It tells you must wait 1/2 hour after running to check the engine oil. Most modern engines need this time or more to allow the oil to drain into the pan for correct checking of the oil.

You are correct but that will only mean his oil level is even more overfilled if he s not letting it settle :D

There was another post like this that went on for what seemed forever, do a search, there was some info on wrong dipsticks or something like that.

LOL, I am not a complete idiot :D . I did a few searches and came up blank which is why I posted the question. I do know that 5w30 will settle to the pan pretty quick when hot. In my truck, hot, cold, 5 minutes or 3 days, it's still shows overfilled by at least a quart. I was just curious as to whether or not it was a common issue. I am even more curious as to how it happened.

I have noticed the same thing when I was changing my oil. I let the oil drain out twice and put in 6 qts. It was over the line. I don't think it's a big deal.
