Observations From Scanning My 5.3 Silverado W/hp Tuners

Wish I still had my 06 M6..... traded 3 weeks ago and I still feel empty

GM could make a commercial about my GTO and me. Even though I've had a daily driver the whole time, I've managed to rack up over 100,000 miles on her. I'm not a nutswinger either...I'm just in love. I went out looking for a Bonneville, and wanted to also drive an Acura TL. I never made it to the Acura store. The sales lady at the dealer talked me into driving the GTO after 5 mintues of me telling her there's no way in HELL I would buy it.

Finally, I broke down and said, "WTF, I don't have anything to do anyway." lol I drove it from Lindbergh & 270 in St. Louis to Imperial, MO, taking her up to 130. I turned around, took her back, and called my wife..."Honey, I found my new car, but it's not a Bonnie or TL." :)

After I explained what it was, she just said, "Whatever makes you happy, honey." I love that woman!

I then made the mistake of installing headers - the crack cocaine of modding. I couldn't stop...but all old school modding. None of that fancy schmancy artificial breathing aparatuses for me. Give me a big cam, heads, and headers!

I just got done detailing her for 2 hours just so she looks good driving to work tomorrow. Took her down to a parking lot near my house to take pictures of her, and it turned into a 20 minute car show. Some people in the shops heard her idling, and had to come over and check her out. Of course, I had to give them a nice show when I took off.

3. Though DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cutoff) is enabled, it seems as though AFM replaces it. When you let off the throttle, AFM disables 4 cylinders, but DFCO never, ever goes active. I'm wondering if killing AFM would allow DFCO to engage, and therefore help make up for any MPG lost disabling AFM.

My observation has been that no, AFM being disabled doesn't affect DFCO operation.

I'm trying to remember, do you have the iron block 5.3 or the aluminum block in your new truck? Mine, with the Aluminum block, is definitely more sensitive than yours in terms of how much KR I get -- I've seen it at times pull as much as 20 degrees of timing.... which is rather amusing, watching it fall flat on its face that way

Hmmm...I've had the DFCO status bit showing when logging, and mine never kicks in at all. Well, at least that status bit isn't showing it. If I had a wideband in there, I'd be able to see it.

I was looking around on the HPTuners forum and it looks like we do get false knock. I will log mine some tomorrow and fill it with 93 and log again before I start tuning this thing. I don't want much, just a little performance and better gas milage.

Yeah...I'm not doing anything until I get a few more miles on her and run some O93 too. I'm not in a hurry. She's not even broken in yet

I was looking at a couple different cars at the time and was just gonna test drive the GTO for the hell of it. Only car out of 4 performance cars that the salesman road with me.... so I had to baby it ... But I knew enough about them to know its potential. Ended up squeezing it into my price range and buying it the next day. Never been happier till I moved up north and insurance started killing me.

Put 20k miles on it from mid-Jan 08 to Oct 08 when I parked it for the snow. People still shake their heads at me ever since I sold it. Most say it wasn't a GTO, it was THE GTO. Only had catback Loudmouth I exhaust and Billet Specialties Short throw on it. But it was the way I treated it shocked everyone who knows me that I got rid of it.

I was playing around on HPTuners forum and found an 07 Sierra that was getting 2-5mpg better by playing with the 4cyl mode. His tune is in the repository. I will start playing with it once I get mine scanned.

I'm getting ready to sell my 04 Pulse Red. I rarely drive it but I hate to see it go. We can have a cry-fest.

On the knock, the timing pull is so aggressive that when I had the timing reduced I actually gained power. I still run and tow with 87 and it runs like a dream.

Looks like that's going to be the ticket. I filled her up with O93 last night, and saw just a couple small blips of KR on the way to work. I bet if I just remove a little of that ridiculous part-throttle advance they've got dialed in and adjust the knock settings to somehting reasonable, she'll run like a dream.

FWIW, the performance was unmistakably better this morning. It was probably helped by the IATs in the 60s...will run another log this afternoon when it is hot.

WARNING - DO NOT LOOK AT THE ATTACHED PICTURES IF YOU HAVE A WEAK STOMACH!!

If this web site has a rule against posting gory pictures, I'm sure to get an infraction for this

Is it possible I had bad gas? Moisture in the tank because it is new? WTF, over?

Three logs were the same conditions - mid to upper 80s. The only exception was the log this morning - about 60 ambient. I must have pulled the cable out when I moved the laptop to the back seat when I picked up my daughter today, or it would show some WOT runs to redline.

For those not used to looking at HP Tuners log, what you're seeing is how many degrees of timing advance is being pulled (retard) due to knock. It is set to show the maximum value that particular cell pulled at any time during the log.

Upper legend is RPM, and the left is MAP, so the farther right you go is higher RPM, and the farther down you go is foot farther in the throttle.

Holy crap! You sure the only thing you changed was the octane? That's a night-and-day difference.... wow. It's as if GM actually gave you a 93-octane tune right from the factory.

I wish my truck behaved like that... I still get loads of KR regardless of what gas I'm running. I just split the difference and run 89, and I've done some very mild modification to the timing tables. No wideband yet means I can't go crazy on the PE tables or any of the airflow tables.

Well, now that you mention it, I did change the oil last night and put Amsoil in. Must be some good chit

Well, now that you mention it, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Fixed. :P

I could end the commercial with a nice smokey burnout...after removing torque management, of course

    • Looking at cheap tires for this project '95 Blazer. I'm seeing all sorts of brands I don't recognize. 235/75/15 are the size I'm after.   "Dirt cheap" (<$100/each) Starfire Solarus (AS or AT) Rocky Mountain HT2  Mohave HT Westlake SU318 H/T Laufenn G FIT Entry Level AS (yes, Entry Level is the name of the brand!)   "Somewhat cheap" (<$150/each but >$100) Kumho Solus TA51a Ironman (Les Schwab) Cooper Discoverer RT AT Hankook Kinergy ST (H735) Milestar Patagonia H/T Toyo Extensa AS II   The only one that stands out is the Cooper Discoverer in looks and actual brand recognition for me. $120/each. The buyer for this truck will probably want a visual look of not a completely smooth car/highway tire and this one has slightly blockier tread.   Starfire is supposedly a sub-brand of Cooper. Mohave is a house brand of Discount Tire. The spelling bugs me, I've always known it as Mojave. Kumho, the name, still makes me giggle.   If I was selling it tomorrow, I'd probably go with anything in the Dirt Cheap category. But I may drive this around through the fall and my mind would be ruined knowing I'm rolling around on "Laufenn" or "Entry Level" tires, name alone.   In a world where *most* tires are now offshore-produced, is one low-buck tire much better than another?

    • Most vehicles have engine covers. The cooling fan’s are below the cover. That probably doesn’t help. I cleaned collector car engines. The rest not so much since the last one protested by missing for a few days drying out.
