I called the parts store today to see about a filter and gasket kit for the tranny and they said the book or computer showed 7.7 quarts of dexron 6 fluid witch is synthetic.. is that what the truck came with, what are you guys using. $4.85 per quart

Most likely your truck came with Dexron 3. The 6 is a synthetic blend and suppose to be REALLY good stuff. Thats what they put in the new 2007-up trucks.

We had a trans flush done last may, DEX VI was used. Gonna do the pan filter thing soon, and will put Dex VI back in. No Ill affects at all, runs great.

Your truck would have come with Dexron III,which has been replaced by Dexron VI.

I bought 12 quarts of Pennzoild Dexron VI from Amazon.com....they only sold it by the 6 pack for $35, so I bought two.

Anyway, since I had extra I used some in my 90 Bonneville...it really made a deffinite difference...smoother shifting for sure...I was surprised.

Still haven't changed it in my truck....hopefully this week.

Thanks guys for all the replys, yea that was the other question everyone answered, was can i mix it,let me know what you guys think of this? if i drop the pan and do the filter and replace the 7.7 quarts and than do it again couple hundred miles later,i should have almost all the old fluid out. right?

Yes, changing the trans fluid to synthetic...twice , "officially" makes your transmission fluid synthetic

Fyi...I've changed filters on two different 2004 Suburbans both with 4L85E transmissions. Each transmission required no more then ~4 quarts of fluid vice 7.7 quarts.

ill double check, and after your word i would think 4 was enough. why would 7.7 come up

I was going to say....It should take 4 or 5 quarts after a filter change,7.7 seems like way too much

Mixing the fluid with what is inside the transmission will not hurt a thing. Changing it out with a pan drop now and then doing it again at your next oil change helps to keep the expensive cost down. About the third change and you will be mostly synthetic in the transmission.

I would say 5qts is all you should need on a pan drop to refill. 7.7 sounds a bit much. But it always is good to have more than not enough. At least you can have it for the next change out.

thanks guys im definitly going that route, just say i do the fluid from the pan like 3 times would you change the filter each time or maybe just the 1st and 3rd or last. did anyone get or use a deeper pan with a drain plug

My pan has a drain plug from the factory. I guess GM figured it would save them some cash and stopped putting one in the pan after 04 I think. I would just change out the filter the first time around and then just the oil. Since you do not have a drain plug I would put one in. If you do a bunch of towing and hauling then a deeper pan would be a nice addition to keeping the fluid in good shape and aftermarket pans mostly have drain plugs in them.

I traded out the stock pan on my 4L80E for an aftermarket pan with the plug just to make my life easier changing the trans fluid @50K... 2 1/2 gal of amsoil later the trans has all new fluid in it!
