Ipod Install Into '93 Silverado.

This belongs in the Classic section, but I figured there's more traffic in here and it's a pretty interesting read. I take NO credit for this. My buddy did this all on his own, I just took some crappy pictures while he did it.

Basically, the pictures and description below show/tell you how to play your Ipod through the old GM factory radios with the cassette player. (Auto-Rewind FTW!)

What you'll need:

1. Standard double male ended 3.55 mm headphone cord. (Cut one end off, and strip the two wires)

2. Wire cutters/strippers.

3. 1/4" socket set.

4. Some electrical tape or heat shrink.

First, take off the dash cover. Pull the bottom out toward you, and pull down.

This is what you'll see.

Next use a 9/32" socket to remove the three screws that hold the tape player in.

A gentle tug, and she'll come right out.

Next use a 1/4" socket to remove the screws that secure the top cover of the player. There should be one on each side, and 3 or 4 in the back.

The cover come off sort of like this: vvv

Here's the harness you will need to deal with. Sorry for the crappy picture, but you get the idea. The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual says the wire you need are orange/white and white. Unfortunately, no such wires existed. With some probing with a test light, we figured out that the wires you need to cut are the 2nd and 3rd wires from the back (back as in back of tape player). Cut these as close to the harness as you can. Take the ends of the cut wires (the free ends) and connect them to the ends of the headphone cord. the wires are tiny, so we decided to solder them instead of wirenuts. In the picture they are wrapped with electrical tape because this was a trial run. We later used some heat shrink on them.

Tuck the headphone cord into the existing slot in the back of the tape player as shown.

Take the other end and run it through the slot where the tape player sits, down behind the dash, and out the bottom of the dash. This was the cleanest way we could find without drilling/cutting.

Put everything back the way it came out, and wa-la.

I'll get some final product pictures up here tomorrow probably. I got a little over excited and forgot to get a few. Since this is not an Ipod specific cord, it can be used with anything that works with headphones. Another nice touch is that when the headphone cord is plugged into a cell phone, you can use it sort of like a redneck bluetooth and hear your phone via the truck's speakers.
