When To Switch To Syn Oil

I just recently got my 09 Sierra (5.3L) used, and it only has 5500 miles on it. The dealership has conventional in it (maybe a blend), and I'm going to switch it to synthetic. I already have the Amsoil to put in it, but I've heard that you shouldn't put synthetic in new engines, you should break it in first. I'm just not sure that applies to the new engines today, but I thought I would ask here first. What do you think?

Thanks everyone! I'll change it tonight.

2COR517: I run the ASL (5W-30) with the Amsoil filter. In the past I've ran it for 10K miles or one year (which usually coincided anyway). However on the first change I'll change it earlier, ~2K-3K.

While I'm at it, I have another question. I bought the EaO50 filter, per the Amsoil app guide. However, for the Grand Am I had before, there was another filter they carried that fit as well, but was much longer. Is there such a filter for the 5.3L? I noticed the filter on the truck now is longer than the EaO50.
