Different Build Specs In Same Year.

I am one of the lucky people that own one of only 15% of the GMC trucks built a certain way in 98. The other 85% is listed under a different letter designation in the VIN. Yesterday I started replacing the rear U-Joint on my rear drive shaft. After a few trips to the store I wound up using parts from the new joint and old joint to get my truck back together. The shaft utilizes clips that snap directly on to the u joint on the inner side of the yoke. The yoke on the differential uses the same set up. No one at the 2 parts houses had heard of this set up for my truck. I had to get a joint for a 3 piece shaft and then use 2 of the original caps to be able to put my truck back together. Has anyone else run into this type issue?

After some research, it looks like the ujoint I needed is actually for a regular cab not extended cab. I think these trucks were built with spare parts!
