Valve Trai"ticking Noise" On Cold Start

I have a 2002 GMC Yukon 5.3 Liter engine.

When I start it after it has been sitting awhile, (overnight, while at work) there is a ticking noise (sounding like a valve sticking ??). The noise goes away after a minute or so. If I let the engine warm up some ( ~5 minutes) the noise will go away.

I have purchased an extended warranty (not GM ) and the warranty is up soon.

I am considering taking it in, but would like to have some more back round info before I go in .

Use synthetic oil and your problem will next to disappear.

If a valve were sticking you would get a sputter, not just a tick.

Also, injectors on these engines are notorious for being noisy...it could be coming from there.

If it goes away after a couple Min's you sound like your fine.

You might want to check out this site......pistonslap.com or do a google search for pistonslap. I have a 2000 chev silverado 5.3 with the same noise.

my 04 does the sound too, sorta like belt pulleys jiggling? mine goes away after a few minutes too..who knows maybe we have the first diesel motors to run on gas

+1 on slap ,take it in and leave it overnight for a cold start for the tech to listen to

It used to happen on my 99.5, 03 and 05. I bought a 07 NBS, and it never happened until two days ago. ("tick-tick-tick-tick!) It went away after I drove it a while. The next two days....NUTTIN! Must have had a bad night out in the driveway!

Like I said...use synthetic oil

I had a tick all the time until I started using synthetic...now it never happens.

Ive got the oil and filter already.I am just waiting for the mileage to change it.Being as it is starting to get cold out, it should get real loud soon.
