2005 Silverado Fuel Filter

I had a new fuel filter left over from the days of my 2000 Silverado and when I went to look for it on the frame rail of my 05, its not there. So, I'm guessing its in the gas tank, correct?

 

Other than to piss me off, why did GM do this? Is the filter before the fuel pump, thereby protecting it? I know GM had problems with their in tank pumps.

 

If not, is it possible or practical to install an external filter?

yep its in the tank

They did this when they went to a return less fuel system in 2004. Most manufacturers have done this. There have been no problems with this system that I know of.

Is it intergral to the fuel pump?
