Transfer Case Noise

Only in 4wd when i get on the gas a little, what seems to be the transfer case makes a loud POP it sounds alot like the chain slipping over the sprockets.

 

its only in 4wd the truck drives amazing in 2wd

 

any ideas?

if you do a 4wd brake stand so to speak and the truck feels and sounds like its comin apart,its a chain and sprockets alright ,alittle pricey I find.

 

 

 

get it double checked by a tech

Sounds like the same problem that I had on my 99 Tahoe.

 

I was on a bit of a budget at the time, and the sprockets weren't showing too much wear so I only changed the chain.

It's a bit tricky pulling the transfer case apart if your looking to do it yourself with the clutch packs in there but as long as you keep track and take your time it can be done. I ended up getting lots of practice taking that thing in and out...

If you take it apart, make sure you do the oil pump case saver fix. There's a little sheet metal "clip" that is supposed to keep the pump tab from wearing the case. It often breaks and the pump tab rubs a hole thru the case. This causes a little leaking oil and allows dirt in. Make sure whoever rebuild the TC is aware of this little problem and it's fix.
